Help starting issues

Okay 2001 interstate went dead on me one morning on the way to work went and got the trailer and it started right up to get it on the trailer. Well I replaced the battery and after charging it still nothing fuses look good..... push start button and headlight goes out. the only thing unusual was the morning it died it took awhile to start the battery was almost dead when it finally started.....Any help would be greatly appreciated

Like mike said.......it never hurts to take 10 minutes to clean the starter button.  But, since it quit while riding, that doesnt really seem like starter button alone.

First off check the solenoid behind the right side cover.  make sure the contacts are clean and tight and the fuse and plug housings are clean and not melting.  A little dilactic lube is a good thing in there to keep moisture out.

Then check the ground over there near the alternator.....if thats dirty or loose it can cause what happened to you.

Clean up those connections on top of the starter relay and associated connections under the right side cover.  Corrosion never sleeps.  Hoser

The red kill switch on the handlebar will also cause some wierd stuff. Mine would die and I could restart by popping the clutch. I've found if I work the switch a couple of time with the key off once in awhile the problem goes away. Dirt contact in switch I guess . I finally removed the switch and cleaned it and no problem after that.

Ok thanks everyone it was the kill switch.. rocked it back and forth a few times and it started right up....

I had a similar issue one day. While in the diner a group wandered around looking at the bike, I didn't think anything about it. Went out and It wouldn't start. I tried everything I could think of. I ended up trying to push the bike a couple blocks to a friends truck garage. I'm no longer built for pushing motorbikes anywhere. I stopped just short of a major coronary to catch my breath. While heaving and panting behind the bike I noticed just a slight amount of the kill switch button sticking above the switch housing, maybe about a 1/16". I poked that button and the starter switch and it fired right off. Whether I bumped the switch or the 'lookers' I can't really say, but, its now a thing to always look at. Its always something.

I managed to inadvertently rock my starter switch a little while doing maintenance before one of those Smokin' Joe rides
down the whole BRP. It was half way between on and off, I guess it just couldn't make up its mind. I was on my way to the
meeting place in Virginia, when my bike just quit running. I missed the first day of the ride.

Okay she is running but not charging..... I think I read somewhere that there is a fuse that would cause this.. But cant seem to locate it... Anyone have any ideas?

The main fuze is under the right sidecover in a rectangle box with a cover that says fuze, or main or something like that. Should be fairly easy to find
