We left the foothills about noon thirty with temps in the mid 80's and humidity so bad you could smell and feel it. Rode up to Mt. Mitchell highest point east of the mississippi. Temp was 62 but with the wind @ 20mph and gusts to 40 it felt much cooler. I kept watching as we rode that way and the top of the mtn would disappear in a cloud then reappear again. By the time we got there it was socked in pretty good. This pic was taken in the parking lot just below the summit.

The new observation tower in the background. The old one was so decayed the ranger I talked to said one stroke from a trackhoe brought it down.

Rhodadenron in full bloom up there. The one in our yard shed it's blossoms in May.

At times the sky was beautiflul today. This was back on the parkway on the way home.

A great day

I love going to Mt. Mitch. Thanks for the pics, I believe I just got to go up on the mountain one day this week. It just clears the mind don't it!! Looks a bit warmer than KMI 09.

I could have done with some of that cool.

Hot for just over 250 miles looping to and from LaFayette, GA

Onboard temp gauge read 99F on the way home.

Wed is good for me. The other is a tuff question. 181, 226A and 80 are all 3 awesome roads. They all go to the BRP. And they are all within minutes of my house.  Undecided  80 is probably closest for you. What would be a good place to meet up ? Chimney Rock ?

Clouds are nice, but they need to know their way. I don't mind when they reach down and try to tickle me occasionally, but they need to stay up out of the way so I can see where I'm going and RIDE!

I remember the first time up to Brasstown Bald in GA on our honeymoon we could barely see the road all the way to the top, and the hike to observatory. Then we looked out...and could still see nothing, and back down the mountain we went with mouth fulls of clouds dribbling down our chins.

Pretty pics.

Great shots brother!!!  Glad you enjoyed the ride man!  cooldude

I know once we crossed over into Virginia here, the temps dropped (or at least the humidity) and it is pleasent to ride.  Hotter than the hinges of hell to get here up through Mississippi...WHEW!

Thanks for sharing bro!  Sorry about not linking up in Tennessee/North Carolina, but we changed our route at the last minute.  The reason we were switching over to the hills was to cool down, but we decided it would give us another day at the other end if we superslabbed just one more day.  Sure wanted to link up with you.... I have said this ride is fluid, so no telling how we are coming back.  Want to meet up with Lady Draco and Highbinder again as well, just will have to wait and see how/what/when.....

Sure wanted to link with you again my friend....until we do - SAFE WINDS BROTHER!  cooldude

What a RIDE!

Knoxville, Tn

« Reply #16 on: June 23, 2009, 06:45:33 AM »

Laura and I left Maryville, Saturday about 4 pm and it was 95 degrees.  We rode down through Townends, the National Park up Little River, up over Newfound Gap, and out to Clingmans Dome. It was 65 degrees in the parking lot at Clingmans.  It's also a nice little twisty road from hwy 441 to the parking lot, even though it's only about 7 miles.  The ride was great, the cool temps were great and so were the views.
