so why can't a feller use just the straight ones? What the heck is the reasoning behind the right angle one?

to get the air hose on to put air in or the air gauge on to check the pressure.  I use the 90 degree ones from Patchboy.com.

Expensive but worth every last cent. Never a worry about failure. Easy to check pressure or add air.

The ones from PatchBoy are one 7734 of a lot chaeper and better looking in my way of thinking.

The Airete ones are a single piece of aluminum billet that clamps to the inside and outside of your rim.

+1 on the patchboy link.
I replaced mine earlier this year.
Very happy with the quality stems at discounted price.
I bought a few spares.
Should last quite a while.
