What does the data say?

Corinth, Texas

« on: February 18, 2013, 06:56:25 AM »

Date: 03.02.13

Time: 0900 until we're done.

Place: Valkpilot's abode in Corinth.  PM for address details.  Include your real name and forum handle in order to be assured of a response.

I've got a pretty fair collection of tools, plus we'll have the DFW VRCC football on hand which contains speciality tools and the carb sync set.

Let's start a wish list of things to be done so we can start the planning.  If you need a lift adaptor, please note that so we'll have one available. (I'm spoiled by my permanent mount adaptors.)

If you need tire work done, we can set up the tire changer.

You'll need to haul away your old tires and anything significant you drain from your bike, e.g. oil change or coolant change type volumes.

Who's in and what needs to be done?

I can be there.  I would like to get my MC jack fixed somehow.  I'll likely be bringing my trailer with the jack and an adapter if anyone needs.  I don't think the bike needs any work.  Let me know if you need anything else of mine VP.

As for tires haul away, there is a place in downtown Lake Dallas that took my last tire in for $2.  I think Discount Tire wanted 6 or 8.

I plan to be there.  I can't really tell what is causing it to run so poorly as of late, but may try to rebuild the pingle...maybe clean the air filter?  Maybe just turn the whole thing over and shake it and see if any loose parts fall off?

Timbo,
Goodyears tire testing facilty in San Angelo just changed the fuel protocol. Mandatory fuel treatment at every fill up for all testing vehicles period. Shocked  Something about the quality of fuel?? uglystupid2

Fuel treatment is your friend, especially on small engines, motorcycles and other gasoline engines that sit for more than 5 days.

I need to open up my turn signal switch housing and do some cleanup & lube.  I also want to go back to oem risers/handlebars, so that work all fits together nicely.

I guess I'd better order in some new grips.  The ones I'm riding with won't survive another off-and-on.

Dan, do you have a new filter and the petcock rebuild kit?  I've got a new filter to sell if you want, but if you've got to order a new petcock kit anyway, might as will buy them together.

Actually, I did pick up some Seafoam yesterday (before reading this) and it was on sale at pepboys for $7.50 (I think that was a good price?)

And, if I get the handlebar & related finished, there is an Interstate ICM in a box on the shelf that's been calling out to me...

If you change the ICM, do you also have to install an IS timing wheel/sprocket/thing? (I forget the actual name of the part... laugh)

Pffffft.

Those of us who work will be warmed in our bodies by the rigors of our labor and in our souls by our accomplishments and the sense of self worth that results.

Layabouts and hecklers will be chilled in their bodies and embittered in their souls by their sloth.

Not only that, the current forecast says low 50s, little wind, and sunny, so fie on your firepit, knave.

OK, so let's plan on starting at 0900 on Saturday.

The attendee and work list so far is

brew1brew -- Carb sync and rear end service (We should do the carb snyc first; the engine needs to be warm).

WDAN -- Petcock rebuild, air filter change

Disco -- Handlebar & riser swap with grip changeout

Rainmaker -- new front brake rotors

Timbo -- Special Agent In Charge of Disruptive Behavior (generally responsible for fine tuning the skills of other layabouts and hecklers)

TimTee -- Observer & helper/heckler

Spoiler -- Observer & helper/heckler

Chris_1_chris  -- helper/heckler

ThagAndy -- helper/hecker/layabout with one foot on the slippery slope that leads to reporting directly to Timbo

Daniel Meyer may come by and pick up a tire.  Daniel, if you want to mount it while there, let me know.

Did I miss anyone?

brew1brew's stuff will take the longest.  I'd like to stick his bike in one bay and either WDAN's or Rainmaker's in the other.  We can probably get those two done and get started on Disco's in the time it takes to complete brew1brew.  Other miscelleneous stuff like poking at Timbo's bike can fill in the chinks.

We could be wrapped up by 1300 and turn this into a wrench-to-ride-to-eat!

Boy.  I hope nobody holds their breath for THAT time frame.  ???

Possible Add- I picked up an adjustable clutch lever that according to forums I will need to make a slight altercation to install.  If we have time for it great otherwise - no biggie.

Yes, those do take a small modification.  Best to have a Dremel tool or small hack saw for it.  I have them on mine and did the mod myself so I'm sure I can help out on that.  Should be a 15-20 min job tops.  Just gotta be careful when removing the plungers on the oem levers.  Best $50 I spent on the bike.

Dave,

You can try this.

Cut a coat hanger to reach all the way to the end of grip.  Take a small screwdriver and work your way up the grip then squirt some lubricant.  Push the hanger end all the way end.

Now just turn the coat hanger clockwise and the hanger should go around counter clockwise and work it all the way around and then should just pop off.  Best way I have found Cheesy

Thanks for the great tip, Joe, but I'm replacing a pair of Show Chrome Comfort Raised Grips (PN 17-371) that have seen lots of miles.  The chrome is still in very good shape, but the rubber is worn, torn, and poking out through the slots in the metal.

My old ones used to look like this:

My new ones do...

Guess we took my front end apart (again) prematurely. Could have done it with you guys. Planning on going to a funeral Saturday, but may stop by with forks and fork oil just to feel part of the party. Going to change to a lighter weight oil to see how that works with Daryl's triple trees and spacers.
