I am thinking of taking a trip with a friend into Canada but neither of us have found any info on this. He has been riding about 10 years on Ohio Temps. He has never got a permanent license. We both have passports. We are thinking of crossing the border from Upper Michigan into Canada, Traveling south and entering back into US through Detroit.
Any have any knowledge on US temps in Canada?
Thanks

If the license is valid in the US, it is valid in Canada, although it must be a picture ID or be accompanied by a picture id. Your liability insurance is required and valid also but your proof of insurance is NOT valid in Canada...ask your agent for a Canadian proof of insurance card (it's yellow). It should cost you nothing, but if you don't have it, it's the same as not having insurance at all up there.

Why would a man ride 10 years and not have a licence? If he can't pass the test, do you really want to ride anywhere with him?

Sorry threevalks, a license does not make you a good rider. I rode for a long while without one, not because I couldn't pass the test, but because I resent Government inserting its self into every segment of our lives. I started riding long before a motorcycle license was ever even thought of in California, so when they decided to require licenses, I resisted and didn't get one. I finally did, but it took awhile for me to do so. Now, when I got the license, did it make me a better rider? Absolutely not, but it did give the State more money to waste. I have taken rider courses over the years that have absoluely improved my skills, but the license did nothing to improve them. The license is about money, it is not about safety. Just my 2cents.

Not stiring ----- here, but I just can't understand it. The man has been paying for Ohio temps for 10 years, so it ain't about the money or the time, or the goverment. In Ohio, to obtain a temporary permit you have to pass the written test, a eye exam, then pay $19.50 for the permit that is good for 1 year. When it expires you get to do it all over again. A licence cost $23 and is good for 4 years. Maybe there's a hot babe at the DMV.

In NC when you have a learner's permit (which I assume is a similar document to the Ohio Temp but please correct me if I'm wrong) you cannot carry a passenger or leave the state of NC. Our learner's permit (a term pulled from our graduated license lingo) allows the pilot to ride all over NC (from Mountains to Ocean) day or night, but we are not supposed to leave the state. If you show up at bike week on a NC learner's permit they can hit you with driving without a license. So, I couldn't have ridden in Canada (technically).
Just curious.
We're heading up to Canada from PA over the 4th(or that's the plan anyway). It's a weekend of holidays July 1 in Canadia and July 4 in middle-Northern America here. Should be fun.

He rode illegally carrying wife and kids and leaving the state whenever he felt like. He thought it was an ethical dilemma, he had worked building houses so when the weather was good he worked. When the weather wasn't good enough to work they wouldn't give the test at the DMV. So he just renewed his permit and kept going hoping not to get caught.
