My 2001  standard , took the passenger seat off and  want to take the back rest off.
I am lazy , looks like  a lot has to come off just to take the back rest off , right ?

four bolts (8mm I think) hold the entire post in place. Remove bolts and pull straight up. You will need a cruiser bar to take its place or it's gonna look kinda weird.

What part are you wanting to remove? Is it just the sissy bar and backrest itself? If so, that involves only the four small bolts...two on either side. That leaves the vertical attachment bars in place and many of us just buy a  thing called a Cruiser Bar to bolt in there. Looks good and leaves you with the option of reinstalling the backrest if so desired. But, to remove the vertical mounts as well involves removing the fender side rails to unbolt them, then reinstalling the fender rails. Problem is, that leaves a rather large ugly open slot on top of the rails. That's why most prefer to leave them on and just mount a bar across there. Hope you can see the part I'm referring to over the back end of the fender.

That slot is actually not that noticeable.  Barely 3/16"  I ran it like that for a long time. Just had the solo seat and the fender rack.

kidd....

There are two options for cruiser bars.  One is the one from Big Bike Things and there other one is from Custom World.  You can get it at Directline parts here.......

http://www.directlineparts.com/product.asp?pid=1262&str=2

I have the Big Bike Things bar on my Valk whenever I go solo.  I've seen more BBT bars on Valks than I have of the Custom World bar.  I think the BBT bar sets a little lower and looks a little better myself.

A cruiser bar is waaaaay easier to use than taking the fender rails apart.  It only takes a couple of munites to swap out your rear seat/back rest/luggage rack for a curiser bar.

HAHAHA... that is what I get for not checking the board first... I just spent 3 hours and several trips to the store taking off the backrest mounts.

Do you have to also take off the paniers if you’d like to remove the whole backrest assembly?

wow, an 8 year resurrection.  Grin  yes if you want the brackets off you need to remove the shocks and fender rails.

I just put on the grab bar and one of his solo fender racks, all polished stainless steel, looks great too. Makes the solo seat set up look more complete.

It's against the rules to say something looks good and not post a picture.   Smiley
