Hello to all, I just got the 98 Valk standard a few months back. Da#@ nice ride I also have a 05 VTX 1300C.
My question is, can I tell if the bike has been desmoged without removing the tank??
I installed Cobra 6x6 pipes and have decel popping coming from the right side only

Thanks

Welcome to our big ol' goofy family...

Not sure if this holds true for a CA model...  Look inside the lower portion of the intake runners.  If all but the number 6 runner (petcock vacuum) have the nipple capped off, it's been desmogged.  If some of the runners (don't remember which ones) have hoses attached to them, it has not been desmogged.

You mentioned you put on Cobra pipes. Check your headers for leaks. You may need to snug up the nuts. I had to do that about three times on the I/S. I let it cool down after ridding before I tight'n em up. Go easy on them.

I've had my pipes on and off a bunch of times. I don't know if I've ever been successful
reusing the header gaskets, maybe once... I've got a set of those Viking fiber ones I
don't want... some people like them more than the honda copper crush ones...

Checked the exhaust bolts and all are still tight, put in new gaskets with exhaust also. The exhaust leak was my first thought so checked nuts and used the BBQ lighter trick checking for leaks not even a flicker of the flame no leaks. Have been reading about different things like vacuum hoses and desmog.

Since you have no exhaust leaks then check the down tubes from the carbs to the heads where you have those little clamps and make sure they are snug. I check them when I change the air filter and have found them to need some tightening. Like the others have said is to check your vac lines. I have found the one on the right side to be the problem child. It will split on the bottom side close to the connection. I have to pull it to check it cause you can't see it otherwise. Sometimes I can hear the chirpping while sitting at a light and sometime ya can't even when I have some decel popping. If all that checks out then I would look at rejetting the carbs.
