I'm planning a trip from MI down through West Virginny and Virginia.  I've ridden the BRP 3 times and was wondering what route 42 is like as an alternative.  Any opinions?  The trip is June 26 - Detroit to Weston, WV, then June 27 Weston to Marion, VA, June 28 - Marion to Logan, OH, then June 29 back to Detroit.  I just kinda looked for the roads with the most curves and planned the route that way.  If any one is interested in tagging along let me know.

If you take route 16 North from Marion, Virginia to St Marys, West Virginia you will have ridden one of, if not the best road in Virginia and West Virginia. Just ask Highbinder, Lady Draco, or Rowdy to name a few.
The only bad section is around Beckley WV. Route 16 kinda gets lost in this area. Just follow 19 North to Fayetteville, WV. Check out the New River Gorge Bridge. Be sure to get back on 16 North out of Fayetteville.
From St Marys its only around 25 Miles to Parkersburg and route 50 west to route 33 west to Logan Ohio.

You're going to be right in my backyard, Marion is just 35  miles from our place and the ride over rte. 16 from Marion to Tazewell, Va. is one of the finest twisting roads around, bar none....give us a hollar and we'll hook up...you can also ride 16 out of Marion to US 58 to Damascus, Va. up to Mt. City, Tn. get on the Snake to Shady, Va. and back around...stay in touch....I just checked those dates, we wouldn't be here then, we're heading to Ky. Harlen County for a campout we'll be joining a  bunch of adventure riders on Black Mt...sorry.

VA SR 42 is a nice ride for many reasons.

For some unknown reason it is broken up into 3 sections that don't connect.

The good part is that the roads between the sections are a lot of fun as well.

If you want to run a long section of SR 42 I would reccommend taking US 33 from Weston, WV to Elkin, WV and then US 250 to Churchville, VA and picking up SR 42 there.

BTW that section of US 250 is AWESOME!

There are lots of other ways that you can pick up SR 42

Let me know where you decide want to pick it up and I'll plan to meet you (I'll PM you my cell phone number).

And SR 16 out of Marion, VA is a MUST ride!

The detour that Highbinder suggested through Damascus, VA and Shady Valley, TN is also an excellent ride if you have time.
