Does anyone have a tank sitting around they can take some measurements from? I'm thinking of mounting a Valkyrie tank on the GL1200 I recently picked up to restore, but need to know how wide the opening is on the bottom. I'll then remove the OEM tank and use that space for something else. I want it to sit down over the frame rails on the 1200 like it does on the Valk. Also, what's the length from the front bolt hole to the rear one. The 1200 has the intake filter under the tank(like the Valk) so I'm tossing around ideas for hinging the tank at the rear so all I'd have to do to change/check the filter would be to remove the front bolt and raise the tank enough to get to the filter. Since the 1200 has a fuel pump, I would either install a quick disconnect in the fuel line or just add extra length to accommodate raising the tank.

John. I have an extra Valk tank that you can use for mock ups if you would like. Just gotta find a way to get it down to you.

Hard to measure from mounting holes due to air box in the way, about 24" cc the best I can tell. 12" wide at front, narrows to 9.5 at the petcock area then to about 5.5 at the rear. Opening narrows as it goes up slowly to a shallow recess of about 4" where it sets on frame.

John, 24" center to center for the mounting points.
11 1/2" at the widest point towards the front of the tank underside, 9 3/4 where the petcock mounts.
This tank has lumps & bumps but nothing major. Someone did an ugly "cream" style reline & it sounds like there is an acorn or something rolling around inside. Good thing I only have $75 invested into it.
If you want to keep it, it's yours... I'm sure I'll need something one day!  cooldude

Thanks for the measurements, looks like that might fit over the frame rails on my 1200. I'll know better when I can set it on there. I'll have to move a couple things off those rails, but if I remove the OEM tank, I'll have all kinds of room for relocating stuff. I'll get together with you sometime for the tank. Thanks again, hope this will work, don't like the fact I'm sitting on my fuel.  Shocked

Ah, John, isn't the tank for ALL Goldwings under the seat?

I forget the actual word you us for the front, but it's only a cover, and there is no gas there.

Yes, that's right. But I want something up front that is actually a tank, not a cover that looks like one. I'd like to find an I/S tank so I can use the existing fuel gauge, but if not....I'll do without. I'll have to relocate some stuff attached to the frame up there, but with the OEM tank removed I'll have plenty of space for that. This isn't going to be a normal restoration, I have a number of changes in mind...one is that big honkin' taillight and turn signals. The light is the size of a Kleenex box and the turns stick out so far it looks the bike has outriggers. I figure I'll be messing with this for a year at least.
