just finished installing u-joint in '99 tourer because of noise i noticed last year on trip back from s.dakota. old joint did'nt seem that bad but installed new one anyway. everything ok until i torqued the axle nut then rotated the wheel...noise was still there...makes a klunk on each rotation of wheel at same point of revolution...elimated brake and still get klunk...back off axle nut and goes away...replaced bearings last year before trip. i have'nt looked inside the punkin.
anything like this happen to any of you guys?

Two things: I'd guess the left side bearing is bad but you said it was replaced. (Who did the work and do you trust them?)
Did you loosen the 4 nuts that hold the final drive to the swingarm before torquing the axle? Then retighten them.

R&R the wheel again and double check the bearings.

You're not rotating the wheel with the swingarm fully dropped (no shocks attached) are you?  Doing so will put the u-joint in a bind and cause a similar noise.

Had a similar situation and it turned out to be  a wallowed out bearing seat on the rear left.  Even a new bearing could move inside the seat causing a noise as you describe.  Sorry to say its eerily similar, Means a new wheel if its the case

Before you tear it down try this.....

Put the bike on a jack so the rear wheel is off the floor.

grab the wheel at the bottom and try to move it side to side

try this at multiple positions of wheel rotation.  If at any point you feel a light "tic tic" movement in the wheel side to side, then it a bearing that is at fault

Same here.
Although I wouldn't call mine a clunk as much as an annoying clicking sound, every revolution of the tire. I also, among other things, changed bearings and they seemed to fit well.

Mine had chrome wheels on it and it seems others that had chrome wheels had this type of issue. Kinda seems like the chroming process affects the machining in that spot.

Another wheel (not chrome) fixed mine.
