Author Topic: ROUGH RUNNING '97 STANDARD  (Read 1582 times)

I HAVE A 97 THAT RUNS ROUGH AFTER A FEW MINUTES/MILES OF OPERATION.  I DID THE FOLLOWING IN ORDER TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BUT IT DID NOT HELP.  I RAN SEAFOAM THROUGH THE TANK.  I REMOVED THE OLD FILTER AND PUT IN A NEW ONE.  I CHANGED THE VACUUM LINE FROM #6 TO FUEL VALVE.  I CHECKED THE QUICK DISCONNECT (INSTALLED BY PREVIOUS OWNER) FOR PROPER CONNECTION. STILL BAD.  THEN I CHANGED THE FUEL VALVE WITH A NEW OEM FUEL VALVE.  I LOOKED AT THE QUALITY OF THE VACCUM LINE FROM #3 TO #4.  SEEMS IN GOOD SHAPE (NO GOOP IN THERE).  THIS BIKE HAS A DYNA IGNITION BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER.  NOW I DONT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR.  WHEN IT RUNS EARLY ON IT RUNS GREAT.....SMOOTH......NO ROUGHNESS AT ALL.  EVEN WILL TO THE NICKEL THING.  THEN THE ROUGHNESS KICKS IN LIKE A SWITCH WAS THROWN.  AT TIMES IT WILL START RUNNING FINE AGAIN THEN BACK TO ROUGH.  THIS STARTED A FEW WEEKS AGO AND DID NOT ALWAYS HAPPEN.  I THOUGHT I MUST HAVE PICKED UP SOME BAD GAS.  NOW IT HAPPENS OFTEN.  PLEASE GUIDE ME TO ANOTHER AVENUE TO LOOK AT.

FLAT6VALK . the < switch> makes me think electrical, maybe a short or probably ignition . check that dana module. 2 more cents. Grin

I don't know if this will help. I noticed you have a Dyna, I don't know if it is the same.  I had a Dyna and every once in a while my bike felt like it was running out of fuel. Very rough running. But when I shut the bike off and restarted it was OK. I thought I had a piece of debris floating around one of the jets. Don't recall how I figured it out but it was my Dyna, I then put the stock mod back in and had no issues. I then replaced the standard mod with a I/S mod and never had an issue since. If you have a stock mod trying switching.

I WILL TRY THAT.  I HAVE A 98 AS WELL WITH A NEW DYNA I PUT IN SO I WILL TAKE MY 98'S IGNITION MODULE AND TRY IT.  THANKS FOR THAT IDEA.

YOU GUYS WERE DEAD ON.  THE DYNA WAS THE CULPRIT, BUT NOT BECAUSE IT WAS A BAD UNIT, I HAD IT SET WRONG.  I WAS CLEANING UP AROUND THAT ZONE AND I MUST HAVE MOVED THE DIAL RESULTING IN THE DYNA TRYING TO DO SOMETHING IT COULD NOT ACHIEVE.  THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.  I HAD GIVEN THOUGHTS TO TAKING TO A DEALER.   NOW I CALL THAT SAVING MONEY.  BIG MONEY!
