Ya really need to schmoose your local dealer. Befriend the parts manager and negotiate a discount structure you like, and assure him he'll get all your business as long as they stay competitive.  HDL's prices are great, but my dealer always beats them, without me even telling him what price he has to beat.
A bunch of schmoosing starting 12 years ago worked for me.  The real advantage is much quicker access to the parts I need, rather than waiting for shipments.

The guy at the parts counter actually tried to talk me into EBC instead of Honda because they were cheaper. The EBC were at about the HDL price as I've now learned from Joe.

Joe, did you ask if they would meet HDL's price?  A few weeks ago I needed a new seal set for the forks...right now. (long story)   Couldn't wait for them to come from HDL so I printed off their fiche page and headed for the dealer.... asked if they could meet the price.  They came within $2 of HDL...that was Ok as HDL would of added $5 shipping.  Oh, I called the dealer before I left the house and they quoted a price $20 more than HDL, that's why I took the info that I printed off.  Didn't let them know I needed the parts right now or it may have turned out differently. I've ask several times if they would match HDL...Nope...The owner is a rich prick and also owns 2 Harley dealerships in Knoxville...We just lost the other Honda /Suzuki dealer in the area ( where I bought my Suzuki Bandit 1200S ) it pretty much shut-down overnight  after many years in business  Undecided

So, here's a couple of recent experiences in my neck of the woods. Had tires changed at a dealer in Fulton NY. $265. /3.5 hours of labor. (I supplied the tires)

Needed new atlternator. $715 Went to different dealer in Syracuse.
This was after I bought one and did the work myself only to find the alternator was defective. " Bring the bike and both aternators in we' ll do it for you. The important thing is to get you back on the road." was the comment when I asked "How much is it going to cost?".  When I asked for my old alternator back, somehow they "lost it". I hate getting ripped off!

I agree with Kingbee on this Joe. I never thought they would but my local Dealer Ehlerding Motorsport does me right. The whole family has bought bikes from them, more than one in some cases. I was buying Honda parts from Directline. One day i asked Brian at the parts counter if he could beat DL prices. I gave him some part number and he came within a couple of bucks. So I get all of my Honda parts from them.

I can add to Mark's praise about Ehlerding's.   We have even borrowed from them, without a deposit or charge, special tools for the Valk.  There are some decent Honda dealers out there.

Charliemac correct me if I am wrong but KennCarr cycles near Johnson City did a terrific job for me at a great price at inzane a few years back.  Got me in and out in 2 or 3 hours on a rear tire change with 3 oring lube ( but I did supply the orings, thrust washer and dust seal and moly)  Very reasonable too.

There are some great folks out there who own dealerships and supply 1st rate service/ Unfortunately they appear to be a dwindling minority. The best mechanic in the area had to give it up cause of arthritis.  He is sorely missed

I have a local Kaw/Suz/dealer and I get stuff from them cause I know they will work with me

Both Ken and the local guy dont mind if I print the pages out of shoptalk on how to do the splines lube or anything else.  Of course nuthin beats a friend who actually knows how to work on a bike like the dalailama or dynodave

Just yesterday I  paid $22.95 for rear brake pads for an I/S from HDL.The I/S rear pads cost less than std or Tourer but will work on either.Local dealers here charge full list with no discounts no matter how much you try to schmooze them.I can usually order the parts from HDL for awhole lot less and have them delivered to my doorstep quicker than my local dealers can order them and get them in stock ready to pick up.

Your lucky they had them in stock Joe. You even say the word Valkyrie out here and you hear "WE WILL HAVE TO ORDER THEM. BE HERE IN 7-10 DAYS." This includes sparkplugs and airfilters.  tickedoff

I got all three sets from HDL last week for the Interstate and a couple of seals for less than the front pads from local dealer.

I feel my Honda dealer should charge whatever he wants for his parts, he knows his overhead and what he feels is a fair markup. I would like to do more business with him but in a free market I get to shop for what I think is a good deal for me. HDL did a lot for the Valkyrie community and I have not forgotten. I buy from my dealer when it is more convenient for me knowing I'll pay more and I won't ask for a discount. To illustrate further I was in the market for a Rincon in 2003 and knew the best price was at a dealer 150 miles away. The dealer reminds me that if I buy my 4 wheeler there I should plan on having my service work done there too. I had to remind him that it is nearly impossible to get any service work done at his shop unless you leave your bike at least 2-3 weeks before it's going to be looked at. I drove the 150 miles and my rincon nor my Valk have seen the inside of his "service dept". Doesn't make sense to me but he gets to run his business his way and he's been around for 30 plus years, go figure.
