Hydrographics ??

Anyone ever had this done?
If so, how tough is it? How does it hold up?
There's a local company around here that does it. Looks like a pretty neat idea.

I think this was discussed on the general board about a month or two ago. Someone either had something coated with this method, or knew someone who had.

My brother does it all the time. Claims he can coat anything with it. He did some plastic trim pieces for his truck and it turned out good. Seems to hold up really well also. Been thinking about getting some and trying it on my spare side covers.

Do they have a procedure for "chroming" side covers. I'd be interested in that. Also, will hydrographics stand up to a little heat, like on an alternator cover?

I used to do hydrographics in a past life. I dipped bows, guns, helmets, accent pieces for cars, fenders, guitars, etc. I used camo patterns mostly but there are 100's if not 1000's of patterns on the films. Catch is that you must buy a large roll of a pattern film to use even a small piece. Not cheap. Some patterns are also licensed. Stuff mostly comes from China. To answer your question about will it hold up and is it durable, it depends on the process used. If a skilled "dipper" preps the product carefully, primers it properly, dips it skillfully and puts a decent top coat over it, it will hold up fine! Any short cuts in the process and the quality of the finished product will suffer and you have a bad experience. The film will scrap off or have blemishes etc.
