Ok local motorheads, got a question:

What is the black, plastic "kinda" box looking thing that sits just inward of the ignition switch? Actualy one bolt that holds the switch holds this thing too.
It's not box shape, about 4" at it's longest part and maybe 3" at its widest and 1-1/2" thick.
It has a hose on top connected to the airbox, another on the bottom connected to the trans housing and a third, smaller hose that goes below the trans, I'd assume a drain.

My issue is the top hose (from airbox) has a pretty good film of oil on it at the connection to this "mystery" box.  Not sure if the box is cracked, or the hose/clamp is not tight enough or some other issue going on here.

Figured I'd ask here first to see what this is and if there is something common I need to be looking for.
It's not the most easily accesible item so I don't want to go jumping off into this if this is a normal condition or something else.

Have you drained your dragon drool lately? The drain hose should have a black plastic plug on it. Have a catch container or rag handy and pull this plug to drain. If could be that the plastic box is full of liquid or that, indeed, you have a cracked hose. The liquid is condensate from the crankcase and is mostly inhaled by the carbs and recirculated. Some just condenses and runs down into the black plastic catch basin and need to be drained.

Yeah I did, and just for good measures I drained it yesterday and about 1/4 of an ounce drained.
But I didn't think this was the same drain line, doesn't that one come directly from the airbox?
Don't think that I'm doubting you, I'm going from memory here and it ain't the best. If I knew for sure I wouldn't be asking questions, right?

The drool tube connects to a Tee. One side of the tee goes into the plastic storage tank. The other end of the tee goes to the air box. There is also a tube that goes from the top of the storage tank and into the air box. I haven't looked closely at the air box itself to see the internal difference between the two locations for each of the tubes. They can't be mixed up, though, because they're different sizes.

Bon S is correct. From the Honda manual it is a crankcase breather storage tank.  The small  bottom tube is connected to  a "t" which leads to the drool tube and back up to the air box drain hole. The large tube on the bottom is connected to the crankcase.  The top hose goes into the air box where it gets mixed with fresh air. Pg 1-35 in the manual is the page

My top hose is also oily and if I recall always has been.  Last time I had the air box off, I checked the hole and hose for obstructions but it was fine.

Thanks for the info fellas. Puts my mind at ease.

I needed to pull my tank to get to some wiring and when I rotated the gas valve I smelled gas so I started looking for a gas leak and came across this oily film and it somewhat baffled me.
But no more!
