When I had the rear end apart to go dark side, I lost a little fluid.  How do you check the level on a 2003 standard?

Remove filler plug #2 (NOT #5 breather).  Have bike held upright.  Oil level should be at bottom edge of filler hole.

I know a std is easier than an IS (even with the bags off), but diddling with the fill hole behind the pipes with the shocks on can be a little entertaining.

Thats why I just change the oil every time the rear wheel is off.  By removing the final drive and changing it on the bench....drain it, add 150cc and no worries every time.  even if it was a flat tire after 100 miles....change it its so little oil and its so easy

Me too. One small bottle of rear end dope (synthetic) will do multiple changes, and it is way easier on the bench than on the bike.

just run a hose attached to a pump on the top of the synthetic rear diff. fluid and keep pumping with the hose in the top fill hole until it oozes out.  I hold bike upright sitting straight up on bike and have my wife wipe the extra goopy thick oil off before it drains down the rim.  Then sit it back on sidestand and button up the plug.  I do take off my I/S side saddlebag off to see what I'm doing better.

Mobil 1 synthetic comes in a pointed squeeze bottle...I attach clear tygon tubing to the tip and route the hose around the muffler into the final drive.  Just fill (while holding the bike vertical until it starts to ooze out of the fill plug hole and you have the proper volume.

That plug does not need to be TIGHTENED.  Put it in by hand when it stops put the socket on it and give it a little nudge, "a snugging" The O-ring seals it and it is soft pot metal......about an eight of a turn past hand tight is all you need.
