I read about all of the maintenance subjects and become paranoid that I'm not doing some of them. However, so many times I get into what should be routine maintenance and end up asking myself, "Why didn't I just leave well enough alone?" or saying "If it ain't broken, don't fix it!"

I've never changed my rear diff fluid since buying the bike used in 2002. Also, I never changed rear diff fluid in any car I've owned and never had an issue. Just curious about the split between those who have and haven't changed theirs in the Valk.

every other oil change...it's probably the easiest thing to do on your bike.

neglect of your final drive will not make your wallet happy.

I think the service schedule calls for it to be changed every 24,000 miles. I do mine once a year which breaks down to about every 5000.

I think many of us tend to over maintain our toys, its only normal. I don't know what Honda says, but, every 20K should be fine. I change it every time the rear wheel comes off.

You probably only have some thick sludge in there, may not even resemble gear oil by now.  OK I'm exaggerating, but it will look nasty when you drain it.........You wont have an issue right up until you do, then its too late

10 - 4 on the sludge. When I changed mine the first time, my Valk wasn't very old and I had a dirty sludge. I changed the lube 3 times in one day. I would do a change then go for a ride and drain a little to see what it was like. I kept that up until I had a nice clean lube coming out of the drain hole. Since then, it's been changed about every 5000 and it is pretty darn clean when drained.

Every other oil change, about 10,000 miles. When I do the air filter...and check the splines...

I replace my rear end fluid each spring when I check the splines, shaft and u-joint. Paranoid, maybe but it keeps the wallet happy. I don't plan to ever have to deal with the rebuild or replacement of a rear end.

Voted no, but will do it this spring for the first time. Had the bike for 35K miles, so it's due, along with the Dragon Drool and air filter...

Used to go 25K and a lot of times it looked ok after 25K. One time it looked like maple syrup. It convinced me that 25K was too long. I used supertech at first then switched to mobile. I went to Summit racing after work the other day and picked up some Red line MT90 and put it in my manny tranny in my bimmer. It really quieted things down. I have a ½ a quart left over. Gonna try it in my valk this weekend. $18 a quart btw.  It's easy to do with one of those cheap pumps. 5.1 oz or up to the fill hole should be good. I'd like to see a pic of the first time change. Don't forget to clean the magnet plug

Bought my I/S in 06 with 7K miles, drained the rear oil, put in Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. The bike has 34K on it now and I don't worry about it because it is not an internal combustion engine.

This makes no sense.  Whatever 30K is a lot of miles on 5oz of oil.........whatever floats your boat

Well, that was certainly easy.  cooldude  The old stuff didn't really look that bad, but then, there are only 28,000 miles on my '99 Std, so it wasn't that far past the recommended change. In any event, it has fresh fluid in the diff and ready to go!
