Because I woulda lost my arse!! Coming off the engine guard on my 99 IS there is a 4" bracket that is welded to the smaller round brace. I was going to put my Kury ISO Wings from my standard on the IS but it won't work. I have a 4" extender now and would need a 8" to make it work!  Wonder what is the purpose of the brace since my standard don't have one?

Where is this piece located?

Only bracket, so to speak, I know of on a I/S is the horn bracket in the right front.

Well, for one thing, the I/S takes an entirely different bracket than the standard. If you don't have the pods mounted the bracket you see is the mount for said pods cooldude

Aren't you talking about these tabs on each side near the 19 & 11... ?

Tourers and Stds don't have them, I don't know what they are for...

On the I/S there are two small air scoops welded between the curved bracket and the sort of straight bars that bolt below the valve cover.  They are  there either to add air flow to the bottom of the valve cover or to keep your foot cooler, or both.

Some people have cut them off to make mounting highway pegs a littler easier.

Thanks guys and Dave I believe you're right and I'm thinking about cutting mine off. For you I/S owners, what purpose does it serve?

Yes RJ it is right behind my horn where the round brace is welded to the engine guard.  Wink

I think that is the one on an I/S to deflect hot air off your feet.

I haven't been into the front end of an I/S for awhile and my remember isn't up to snuff anymore.

Yes, that piece is to direct airflow. I cut some off mine to get the pegs I added to fit like I wanted. The Baker wings for an I/S attach to the top of the pods using the provided screws in place of the two screws on the top of the pods cooldude

Yes it looks like it would direct air but I would have thought there would be one  on the other side as well. Undecided

So when you cut it off, did it mess up the chrome?

Just right on the cut.(I used a side grinder/cutoff wheel) I had some silver paint handy and just used a brush and covered the cut with that

Some time, long ago, someone damaged one side of the engine guard and replaced it with one from  standard/tourer, so the original has the air scoop and the other doesn't.

The air scoops on the IS are the most curious part of the entire bike.  I cannot imagine how they increase or improve airflow in any way (perhaps they were designed to keep the front end from involuntary wheelies).  Cutting them off is no big deal, you cannot see the cut unless you lay down and look, and nail polish keeps rust away.

I too have often wondered what these scoops are for since they were not on my Tourer. I do have them on both sides. I wanted to relocate my hwy pegs but those scoopy thingies were in the way.

Yes it is very strange!! I wish the Honda engineer would just jump in and tell us! Lol What is strange to me that it's just on one side! Is that to keep your right foot only cool? Grin

I think rather than cutting it, I'll just take the guard off my Standard and put on it. I hope my right foot don't roast!  2funny

THey should be on both sides...

Also there is a bracket to help hold the lower part of the I/S radiator pods on, has a grommet like the side covers and a pin in the pod. If you use the standard guard, the bottom of the pod will be loose...

How do I know??? The PO of mine had removed the pods and put on standard engine guards... but tehe pods were included in the sale.... When I went to put them back on, something wasn't right, and being my first Valk, I didn't know any better... they rattled and flopped a bit.... I rigged up a hose clamp and some bolts to secure them down.. later because of an accident I had to replace the guards and put the I/S guards on and the pods are rock solid....

So if your missing the "boot soaker" on the left, either it was cut off or you already have a standard guard there.... if so , how is the bottom of the pod secured? Without the bottom mount, I would be afraid the plastic would crack at the other 2 mounting points..... Or flop a bit/

Just an FYI from someone who has dealt with Rad Pod problems.....

I ended up mounting my ISO pegs to the curve of the main guard.....
