Yet another tedious question about fuel flow & THE PETCOCK. Wed. night I was cruising down the Highway doing about 70 & than started losing power like I was out of gas, so I switched the reserve on & after about a mile or so it kicked back up. The problem is I had 3/4 full tank. I made my stop & had a brew & drove about 25 miles home w/ no problem. I just rebuilt the petcock about a month ago. Also, I always turn the damn thing on & off when stopped or going but last night I forgot to turn it on & made it all the way home w/ no problem. It's a 99 Standard. Any advice ?

When is the last time you had the tank off? Pinched vent line?

I had the same problem, after reading many posts here about OEM Petcock problems, I replaced with a manual Golan Petcock and Pingel filter. It was the best decision I could have made. Before I did it I thought that maybe the manual petcock would be difficult to work while riding this is not the case. I always turn off the petcock when I stop. I would not go back. Good luck. Rick

I think so? 9 o'clock off, 6 o'clock on, & 12 o'clock reserve, right ? How else could I tell ?

Well on reading again if you can switch to all three setting in the correct positions as you listed then probably not the knob....
One posibility is the main valve is bad.....
Or there is some Schmutz in the valve itself?
Might be the diaphragm got a little squirrly when you put it back together, and did not seat correctly and have a gap... possibility.... It is touchy to get it back together....
Also maybe the vacuum line itself is cracked and or leaking?
Bad news is you have to pull it again and take a look......
Did you test the vacuum before you put it back on the bike by manually applying a vacuum on the hose to see if it opened?
Hope any of this helps... I had the same fun you are going thru twice in the 3 years Ive had the bike...Thats why I switched it to manual, but I do have an extra cover set in the bike that I had ordered

Stock petcock is like playing Russian roulette one time is all it takes to let that p.o.s. have a gotcha. You already know the answer, do you feel lucky punk, do ya?

To get the stock petcock to completely shutoff all the time is impossible. If they do shutoff then you have gotten lucky in getting the little in exactly the right position while you held your mouth and tongue in the exact correct position, and, all this must be done during the right moon phase. These things are famous for leaking and diaphram failure. The answer, simple, Pingle.
