I have a 2000 standard 13 years old.. question how long of life does the ignition coil last?... today I went to start it and it missed no turn over and I hit the starter switch and it started sluggishly. when I got home I started it again to see  and I heard a whiny spinny sound if that makes sence when I started it.  if this is a ignition coil problem is there any other coils you can but other then oem.. and has anyone put one on by themselves and how hard is it to do..
thanks..

emrik

thanks for the inputs... the bike ran fine after I started it.. never stalled at a stop... so im thinking battery or ignition coil... im going to check all connections first ... im thinking my battery maybe 4 years old... if the alternator was bad .. I would have gotten far...

Personally, I don't know anyone that has an ignition coil go bad on a Valkyrie. Whiny, spinny sound? If it follows the rpm then it could be your alternator or perhaps a bad timing belt tensioner bearing. Just guessing. Has the bike been sitting around a lot? This can lead to things like old gas, clogged carburetor jets and even just dry carburetors. All these can make starting difficult.

Dyna makes a aftermarket coil I have them on mine and really like them. The voltage output on them is quite a bit higher and mount in oem position. I gap my plugs at 40 for a hotter spark. With this said I agree with the previous post.

Battery ground and hot connections. Is the altenator functioning correctly-putting out juice? Good contact at starter button? Air fuel spark-gots to have all 3 or no go. When it was running smooth or rough? If the alt took a crap you will not get far on just the battery-don't ask me how I know that.  2funny RIDE SAFE.

Starter bad? Hard to tell exactly what he has going on from the way he described it.

I doubt a coil issue. They do go bad but not often.
Zoltan, there are 3 coils and you refer to "the ignition coil".
Check connections and be thinking battery.
The sound may be from the starter and I'm guessing the bike has been sitting for a while.
Maybe charge the battery, start it up and get a hundred miles or so on her-then look at it all again.

Just my interpretation from your post, but it sounds like a weak battery. The ignition coil going bad would have different symptoms. cooldude If the battery was good, either electrical connections or possibly a starter, but given what you've presented, replace your battery if it does it again. It's four years old. cooldude

It certainly sounds like a bad/low battery, poor battery connection or a dirty starter switch[ see starter switch maintenance in shop talk]. If it does run, you don't have a coil issue.

Bad coil wouldn't make a noise of any kind.  Though the bike would only run on 4 cylinders, each of the 3 coils fires 2 cylinders.    I would take a guess from the noise you describe, either a started drive or possibly an alternator bearing.   Would need more info to make a better guess, does it get louder when you pull in the clutch lever?   Sometimes the push pin gets dry and make funny noise when the clutch is pulled in. Noise comes from the area of the slave cylinder under the fuel petcock.

I interpret the whinny noise as the starter didn't fully engage and just whirled freely. Something that'll happen on a bad /low battery, faulty switch, or connections. cooldude given the discription, IMHO
