I need help with getting the fork seals changed out on my Interstate. All the shops are 2-4 weeks out before they can get me in. Anyone know who can help. Swede ~ Wichita

I'm a long ways from you, but have you tried the film trick? It's surprising how many times it will work to stop a leaking fork seal.

Willow's advice is better, but I wrapped a red shop rag around my leaking fork for two years/20K miles.

I have a set to change, this site hosts a wrench party usually on monthly schedule, due to circumstances beyond my control I missed it last time, maybe I will see you at the next one. If not I will get them fixed at Inzane by big BF. Hoser ???

Big BF could do it with his hands tied behind his back, but he wasn't changing fork seals at the last InZane... -Mike

Tell me about the film trick....Olathe would be a nice road trip. do you cahnge out seals???? LOL! There are much better Valk wrenches Than I in Kansas. One of the best is up the road from you in El Dorado and one closer to you than Olathe in Topeka. The film trick involves sliding a but of 35mm film (used negative) between the fork and the seal and then working it around in a sort of sawing motion. The idea is to clean out any grains of dirt or bugs. It will cause the oil to flow during the process, but if it gets the seals to seat again it is a lot less expensive than replacement.

I know things have become rather Chaotic in the Kansas VRCC community, but when you get a date set for the next wrench party let me know and I'll gather what spare/extra parts and tools I have and come help.

You guys just tell me when and I'll have the garage ready. Please bring clothes to get dirty in cause I am on light duty due to tearing my bicep tendon. I have all the specialty tools and we can knock this out in less than an hour. They are not too bad. Jack stands work better for doing fork seals you put them under the crash bars and stabilizes the bike. I had three in the air working on them once. Two on jack stands and one on motorcycle jack. Was pretty cool.
Swede what is your schedule like... I would like for you to meet my buddy Tom Zermani "wildman" he is passing through in a few days so not quite sure what your schedule is like.
Hoser, I haven't forgot about you either.. We can get this done whenever. It would be nice to have both bikes so that we can do them both at the same time.
Joe

Hoser,
We are doing it on Wednesday instead. I would say early wednesday morning. Swede is coming up from Wichita so I'm guessing around 10am would be reasonable but whenever.
