The Landmass Between Mobile And New Orleans

« on: June 30, 2009, 03:11:10 PM »

Between looking for a new job and taking care of Mom, I've been doing some work at her house.  1st I cut back the brush and trees along the yard side of the fence between it and the field.

Moved the stuff to the bottom of the hill.

Then I removed the fence along the road and all the danged wysteria bushes and their 30 year old vines.

That took care of the first 2 weeks.

Last week, the septic system started backing up into the house.  Dug up the pipe from the front bathroom to the septic tank.  By hand!!!

Had 2 contractors come out and give me estimates on a new field line.  1st one wanted to charge $3,250.  2nd guy said we didn't need one.  Had the tank pumped out then pulled about a ball of roots out that weighed about 100 lbs.

Then replaced the pipe from the house.  It was also plugged with roots.

Of course I was under intense supervision by the QA Inspector and the Sight Foreman

That's Mom's dog Cricket on the left and my dog, PJ, on the right.

The General Superintendent came for a visit.

That's all for now.  Found out the local Junior College offers Computer courses through the Employment Office.  Since I'm basically self taught, I decided to get some formal training.  Took the 1st class today.

Yeah, I feel your pain.  I've been putting off digging up the pipe between my house and my septic tank for a couple years now.  It is a terra-cotta pipe in 2ft sections that are just laid together.  Well, a couple of the sections are pulled apart a bit, leaving a little lip to catch debris that causes a small dam that then backs up the entire system.  I know this because it clogged up and I had to get a plumber out.  After he got it unclogged, he shoved a camera down there and we could see exactly what caused the problem.  It has now clogged twice, so I really need to dig it up.  What is going to suck is the first 20 feet of it is under my deck, and the pipe is about 8-10ft deep at the house where it comes under my foundation.

I'm tired reading this.  Sometimes it is nice to remember what work looks like.
At the end of the day here my mind is tired but my body wants to know when we're going to get started for the day.

Thank God the septic tank is in the shade but again dealing with the roots from three trees was a pita.  Every shovel full of dirt was followed by swinging an ax to cut roots.
