Noticed today that there is a new noise coming from the front left(?) of the engine.  Starts after the bike reaches operating temp and drop out after 2k rpm.  seems to be a clattering type of noise, but if you lug the motor down (low speed high gear, or hold brakes and release clutch) it doesnt get worse like a rod knock would.  Also with some attempt at counting I can safely say that its at about half of engine speed.   Water pump?  Front oil pump?  Something else?  Guess it'd help to mention that its a 99' Std with 20653 miles on it.

I would check the belt tensioners.  probably have a bit of build up on them,  you'll see what I mean when you look. good time to check the belt and tension too.

I'll be watching to see what you find. I have a 99 standard  with 17900 miles.

It started making the same noise you describe the day I changed my oil with

Mobil 1 t4 motorcycle oil. Had been running Golden Spectro synthetic blend.

Probably just a coincidence on the oil. But the sound is like a clatter or ratcheting

sound only after engine warms up.

Starts when the bike comes up to operating temp and then drops out around/after 2k rpm.  Can't feel it in the controls  or on the motor, or engine guards and cannot narrow it down with the hose in ear trick or an automotive stethoscope.  Plus as a bit of a head scratcher it doesnt always happen. I've had rides where theres no noise and then the next time its there.  There more often than not.

I have an 2001 Standard that has been doing the same thing you described for about a year now. I probed everything trying to isolate. I checked everything possible (valves, belts, tensioner) to no avail. It was suggested to me to use a heavier weight oil to resolve the clattering, but that didn't help either. I do remember a user here mentioning that is could be the internal oil pump which is chain driven.

Please post if you find out what it is! I don't have the gusto to break the engine down all the way to the oil pump.

Oh! The last suggestion I got to fix it was to simply get louder pipes.

Long shot here, but maybe an exhaust leak????? They sometimes sound like ticking....check the header nuts.....

Another.. ticking/clattering is the PAIR valve...... thought only... rambling...

I had a Wing that had a sticky lifter that would make noise once in awhile.. but it always went away and those were hydraulic lifters anyway...

Oh well... just trying to think outside the box.....

My Dad always used to say "Just turn up the Radio" when I told him about a weird noise.... Working Mechanic for the last 50 years......

I think sometimes after reading this Board,  I start hearing things or thinking these bikes shouldn't make noises.... but they do and alot of those noises don't mean much.... Other than the bike is running... htey aren't 'lectric motors after all.

when I desmoged my tourer I cut the tubes off the fittings at the cyl heads and threaded them for 3/8" plugs.
well the one under the left frt. crash bar loosened up and would dance up and down between the head and the bar with the exhaust pulses. It made an awful clatter that came and went at different rpm.I really thought i was losing the motor at one point.
