Sometimes my '99 Interstate (17000 miles) pops out of first gear when starting from a dead stop. It happened again yesterday when attempting a fast entry in front of an oncoming truck and trailer....had to abort. Is this normal?

Not normal.

DO make sure you are "FIRM" when putting it in first. Slap it in. See if that helps.

Mine will do it in 2nd when im trying to really get on it and go... but it is from just not getting it all the way in good.  That is one thing about the Valk I always thought was odd.  My other hondas i could shift smooth enough that i could not hear the shift at all.  With these big cross cut gears, you have to be assertive with it or it will not engage all the way.

yep no doubt about it valks are not very smooth shifting, you have to be pretty forceful compared to other bikes

don't think that is normal when in 1st gear goes into neutral when you want to get going.  I'd be researching it more since can be very dangerous if pulling out into cross traffic.  My I/S has issues if it gets very hot outside and engine at slower speeds stop and go traffic will be harder to find neutral in between 1st and 2nd gear and sometimes can be a pain in the butt have to be very fidgety to get the shifter into neutral from 1st gear or sometime is hard to even find neutral at all.  When cold out or not riding stop and go traffic not allowing engine to heat up,  it is not a problem.

Try slamming the foot shifter down harder to make sure it is truly in 1st gear and don't be shy about it push harder down.

Same here. I have noticed that with my box-toed riding boots it happens from time to time. With my steel toes on it has never happened. I attribute it to the more positive engagement of the rigid steel toe.

Mine has done that a few times... in different gears.

My problem is always me... getting lazy with my foot.

Put some force into it.  BIG clunk sound when shifting is a good thing on these bikes.

I've never had mine pop out of first gear after I let out the clutch and started rolling.  But I have found a few times where I put in into first too softly rolling up to a stop, and it popped out at some point during the stop.  Gets interesting when you don't know it happened, and pick up your feet while letting the clutch out in neutral.

Thanks for the varied responses. I think it might be the issue of seating the gear firmly---as it doesn't happen very often---and you can feel a lot going on in the tranny shifting down from second to first. Due to change fluids too.

I came here tonight specifically because this has only ever happened to me once and it was yesterday. It engaged just enough to get me going then popped out and left me wobbly in an intersection during rush hour. Tough on the knee, tough on the heart.   I typically double tap to first as I stop at a red.  Honestly don't know if I did that time.    But now I count.

Yep----it'll wake you right up fast! I really think it is just seating that gear firmly as others have pointed out here. I rode yesterday and today with no problems---just firmly seat it in first. Double tap---good idea. cooldude
