What's this go to???

Found this nut laying on top of my engine, under the airbox. I looked hard, can't seem to find where it came from. Can anyone help??? Second photo is better, next to the penny. Last time I was in there was four years ago for a de-smog. ???

It looks like one of the nuts on the long bolt that is just behind the upper part of the radiator between the frame.  This is the bolt that causes "The Buzz."  Refer to the Shop Talk page or just click on http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/buzz.htm.

There is a shaft that goes across behind the fan, it runs through a metal tube. Sits just above where the frame bolts together, the left side is a flange head and the right side is a 10mm nut. See if it's missing on the right side. Would be where the horn mount is if my memory is right. Also, the nuts on the lower engine mounts are about the same size. I'd start looking around to see if any nuts are missing, or have been replaced with other than factory painted ones.

If your bike is a Std. or Tourer, it looks like the nut that holds the horn on.

There are some nuts and bolts  that need tightening every so often, in behind the radiator.  

I'm betting on the one behind the radiator, and above the one that buzzes.

Looks too big to be the horn nut and besides, it doesn't look like it has any weld on it.  That horn nut is welded on to the bracket.....  Well, it is on my 97....

I'd just start looking for bolts on the frame assembly lacking  a nut.   There is one on the left  side that looks like it should have a nut, but that not be the case.  As it is nutless..........   Couldn't resist that........   Happy hunting.......

This nut takes either a 14mm or a 9 1/16 socket. I don't know the thread size. Great suggestions!  I checked, all suggested are secure. I started wondering if it could have been picked up on the road somehow? I really don't think so, as it has, or had the black  paint on it and looks like a frame type of nut with the built in shoulder/washer.
  RJ... I'd like to find where this came from, but at the same time I'm glad my Valk is not "nutless"

I just took a new wide screen TV out of the never opened box. In the bottom of the box was one shiny screw. I looked at the bottom of the TV and didn't see any similar screw heads so I plugged it in and have been watching it for 2 weeks with no problems.
Yours might have been dropped during assembly and replaced by another, the assembly line keeps moving, that makes it a spare

that hold the carbs together.  Nuts on the front of a long bolt maybe?  But you had all that apart right?

I had one missing just like that. Mine was from behind the left side engine guard top mount. When the engine guard is mounted, it sits over top of a bolt head. I believe it is one of the engine mounts. It was very tricky to get the nut back on. You would have to take off the engine guard and see if the bolt is loose. Just another idea.

Thanks all!  Thunderbolt good idea, rechecked that and it's on and a smaller nut.
  Mike, that is the identical nut. If you look from the right side with a flashlight you can see the left, and visa versa. Mine are both on. I'm gonna cross my fingers, hope for the best. Bone may have the answer here.  I have done due diligence, time to ride it and forget about it.

That's the nut that secures the maximated discombobulator thingy that hangs below the black part. Bike will not exceed 250 mph in saltwater without this nut torqued to specs. Hope this helps... ???
