I have the dreaded "popping on decel" issue with my 1997 Valk Tourer. I have put on a set of Mark T pipes, which, of course, made the problem louder. I am planning on doing a desmog, but don't have the time to do it just yet (and want to make sure it cures my problem). So, my question is this: To test if a desmog will cure the popping problem, can I use a hemostat or some other type of clamp to temporarily pinch off the hose that goes from the air box to the PAIR valves to "simulate" a desmog? My theory is that will rob the PAIR system of it's air supply without removing the system yet.
Anything think this is a good idea, will work, etc?
thanks!

It might work. If you disable the vac. from it, it will inject air all the time into the exhaust side of the heads which will make it pop very bad all the time. Try blocking off the air supply line from the air box and let us know.

No, that won't work and a desmog won't stop the popping.
I suggest to go ahead with the desmog anyways.
A synchronization of the carburetors will be the best help to stop the popping.
A leak check at the exhaust manifold might reveal something.
Also the same at the intake runners.
The exhaust is inherently noisy (compared to stock) to begin with, so expect it!

I'd look at the intake runners and those o-rings first.

Intake runner o-rings are fine, changed a few thousand miles ago. The exhaust gaskets are fine, torqued to specs. air box runner clamps are all tight. I am going to try pinching off the PAIR intake, it's a no $$$ experiment.... will keep you posted.

lean on the idle mixture screws is usually the cause of decel popping. open up screws 1/2 turn at a time. if u eliminate it altogether then u will be slightly too rich.

I agree with Ricky-D and CA, mixture is too lean and carbs need synced. I have the Cobra 6/6's and had a lot of popping, adjusted mixture and synced and got rid of a lot of it, but not completely. De-smogging will not help on the popping, only eliminates future hose failures and cleans up engine.

Syncing the carbs will do the most to get rid of the problem,,,, it will also have many other low RPM benifits.
