Tach quit working! Pulled tach out of the shell and tested. Have coolant, oil pressure, side stand and background light (night light). Have 12V power between the green and the black/brown wire  and have an increasing 12VDC signal with increasing throttle. Voltage is about 1VDC at idle and increases as throttle is applied. Most voltage I got was 5VDC at what I would GUESS to be 4-6000 RPM. Anyone know what this tach signal should be? In spite of all checks as stated above, the tach/RPM function does not work. Any help is appreciated as I would like to be certain of a dead tach before I purchase another. Anyone with a tach for sale also in case? Angry

The ICM sends pulses to the tach.  I don't think you can get an accurate reading with a meter unless a has a peak voltage function.  Book says that if peak voltage is less than 10.5 V to replace the ICM.

i have a dead spot in mine. from about 3800-4000 rpm if i'm holding in that range the tach will drop to zero if below or above : no problem.

I suspect a dead spot on the motor of the tach.

the 3 hole in the pc board are where the wiring connects. check to insure connections are still good.

My stopped on my tourer it was a yellow wire in the headlight housing that had come unplugged. i"m sure you already checked the fuse, yes.

Pulled the ICM today and cleaned/checked out connections. Started motor again and tested signal at the tach itself. Nothing rose higher than 5-6 VDC with increasing RPM's. Have a used ICM on order from Pinwall, which should be here by Monday. Will see what happens after it's installed. Until then- I wait.

OK, I'm back with some answers. Did not have a peak voltage meter but had no signal voltage higher than 5-6 VDC. It would appear to be an ICM problem. Got a used one from Pinwall and to make a short story shorter--no luck. Took my tach to a friend and plugged into his harness, checked voltages and tach still didn't work. Approximately same voltages however. Bit the bullet and ordered a new tach. $150 later things are working again. Thanks for any advice but does not appear to have been a standard problem. Low voltage should have been the ICM. Oh well...it works and I'm rideing. cooldude

Chuck
Just being lazy here.
Were you able to order the new tach from Honda??
And if I may what year is yours??
I got a new speedo from Honda and it has a reddish background, my tach has green........99 Valk by the way.
It never occurred to me different years had different background colors.

Ordered the tach through partspitstop.com which I pick up locally, thus no shipping but taxable.
My Tourer is a 2000. I thought all year Standards and Tourers used the same tach. Interstates are definitely different. Both my speedo and tach background color is white. I'm back on the road and happy.  Cool

Sorry Chuck if I didn't make myself clear.
I meant the lighting background colors being red or green.
The dial backgrounds are all white on Tourers and Standards.
I believe the Interstate is an LCD although I have never seen one personally.
