We used to live near the Cove Creek (Maggie Valley area) entrance to the park and visited Catalooch many times, so just a tip for optimum elk viewing, go at first light or dusk. They come out of forest where they stay cool during the day or sleep at night, to feed in the meadows. There are several exhibits--old schoolhouse, church, farmhouse, barn--so be sure to see those as well. A beautiful place that you will enjoy. Let me know if you need any suggestions on other rides in the area.
Reminds me of our honeymoon that took us into Canada. Among the many places we stayed was the Fairmont Banff Springs, huge place that looks like an old castle. You couldn't play golf very early or late because of the elk on the course, and you had to watch where you stepped. Got a bit difficult when putting due to the droppings. The elk would wander all over the course and you just played around(or over) them, but didn't want to appear as though you were challenging them for position. A golf cart was no match for a mad bull elk. One tee box was right below the outdoor seating for the restaurant, about 20' from the patrons. Not many good drives were made from there since you had a rather large gallery. If Rita was still able to travel, I'd retrace our trip next year on our 20th. However....it's not to be.
