"The mountains are calling and I must go."

« on: June 17, 2013, 04:37:38 PM »

Red blinking light which means it's not charging. Plugged my trusty Yuasa in and it functions normally so I know there's nothing wrong with the battery. I thought BT Jr. was a good charger but I guess not. I'll replace it with another Yuasa, I've this one for many years and it's never let me down. I was surprised to find that they still look exactly the same. Just hope the guts are still the same.

Thanks, I'll be on the lookout. Right now they're asking suggested list which is $39.99. Amazon has it for $26.55 with free shipping.

Same problem I had with my Battery Tender Jr. Red light binking, saying battery no good. Used the regular car charger, and next winter went out and bought the CHEK 3300 (?) and have been using that for about 4 years now.

Just replaced the battery last year spring, with a motobat, the orginal battery was a little low, but mostly because of the bad/failing regulator/recterfier in the Shadow 1100, but I fixed that too.

That's a CTEK 3300. Same model I have. Works great.

Check the 7.5 A fuse on the Battery Tender to bike leads. If that is bad, you'll get the blinking light because it's not charging. A new fuse will fix it. This comes from personal experience. I've had many Battery Tenders over the years, and I'm still using them all. Never had a problem, other than a blown fuse on the leads.

Mine don't have no inline fuse. It does have 3 screws that hold it together. Could there be a fuse inside?

Maybe we're talking apples and oranges here. I'm talking about the specific brand, "Battery Tender," made by Deltran. Every set of leads I've ever seen have an inline fuse. If you are using the term battery tender generically as in any battery charger/maintainer, my comments might not be accurate. Sorry. I doubt if there is a fuse that you would have to disassemble the unit to get to.

Fritz, the inline fuse on mine is on the pigtail that fastens to the battery. If you enlarge those small pics to the left in that link you will see an inline fuse holder. That's how mine is.

That's correct. The Battery Tender (all models) comes with two pigtails, one with ring terminals for fastening directly to the battery, and one with the clamps. Both pigtails have the inline fuse. Your pictures does not have any pigtails. Look at the original pic of the Yuasa charger in the first post, and you'll see the pigtail with the fuse holder. If you have a pigtail already attached to your bike battery and it doesn't have the fuse, then it is probably a different brand. How have you connected the Tender in your picture to your battery?

The inline fuse in apparent at the top of the photo showing the Yuasa charger. The pigtail is to the right and shows the blade fuse holder.

I just checked both the connector with the O studs for hooking directly to the battery terminals and the alligator clips that came with the Battery Tender Jr. and neither have a in line fuse. I just started using the alligator clips on the lawn mower about a month ago and distinctly remember taking them out of the pack the BT Jr. came in so I know it's genuine. As for the direct connector, I have 2 of them and neither one has a in line fuse. I know one of them had to come with the BT Jr.

Besides, I can plug the BT Jr. into the pigtail hooked to the Valk and it blinks read, the Yuasa, on the other hand, shows normal so I know the BT Jr. is dead.  Cry

Sorry about the death of your BT jr, but the Yuasa you show in your first post is a better product IMO. I have a half a dozen of them and they been working great. (Lots of batteries to maintain   2funny)

What order did you hook it up? (i.e. plug it in to battery first, then electric, or electric first, then battery) I forget which way you have to do it, but mine won't work unless you follow the directions.   I have hooked it up, red flashing light, un-hooked, read the directions, and it worked fine.  I know it seems stupid, but apparently it matters with the BT jr.

Well hell, ding ding ding. You sir, are a genius.  crazy2

I always plug it into the wall first and then the battery. Just went out and plugged it into the battery first and then the wall and now it's working. Tried it twice just to be sure it wasn't a fluke. Why this issue never came up before I'll never know. Maybe I changed my habits or something. Anyway the Yuasa definitely doesn't have this idiosyncrasy.

Thank you forjj and all the others who responded.  cooldude

my battery tender is doing the same. found a blown fuse in the pig tail i use that is attached to the battery and i keep tucked under my seat.
i'll have to remember the attachment sequence from now on.
glad to hear someone else had this problem, i learned something new, sorry you had the problem though.

I have this Yuasa battery tender and also a Battery Tender Jr. I have had the Yuasa for about 12 years and it still works perfect. The Battery Tender Jr. went bad after 2 years. Yuasa is probably a better unit, at least in my experience.
