My name is Shelly and I purchased a 2000 Valkyrie two months ago with only 8,000 miles on it. Needless to say it obviously has been sitting a while. For the first two months the bike was running really good. When I first bought it I immediately put a bottle of Techron in the gas tank. It was running great until last week. However recently it developed a problem of running really rich. I am only getting 100 miles to a tank of fuel and the bike smokes and smells of gasoline when running. Took the bike to the local Baltimore Honda dealership and $100 later I was told the carborators were clogged and needed to be rebuilt at a cost of $800. Not trusting the dealership we are looking for an honest mechanic within 100 miles of Baltimore that I can take the bike to for a second opinion and repairs. At present, we have put a can of seafoam in a tank of high grade gasoline and I am running that through to see if it will clear up the problem. Thanks for any help.

If the bike is a std/tourer, I believe others have said they only get around 125 miles either for a tank or to reserve (my IS got 180 miles to res). So your mileages isn't too bad.
Techron, Seafoam, then Berrymans B-12. Each about 1/2 a bottle to 1/2 a tank of gas. Low RPM (low speed, high gear), to get the fuel throw the low speed jets.
Try this first, drive/run the bike somemore, before you post again and ask if someone local to you can help out with a carb overhaul.

Welcome to the mad house..
I would think that if the bike ran fine for awhile, then the carbs may not be the problem. Pull the gas tank and check the Air Filter. You never know what could have accumulated up there while it was setting idle. Wouldn't hurt to look inside the tank and see what condition it's in as well. If you don't find any rust, I'd bet the carbs may be ok.

If you feel like you need to take it somewhere (if the easy stuff doesn't work), try here: http://motovationcycles.com/motohome/index.cfmThey are in Mechanicsville, MD and have a good rep for working on Wings. ...ED

Thanks everyone for your help! I still have to run this tank out and hope it is still smoking from the SeaFoam. If not, I will call the mechanic you recommended. Thanks so much !

What all have you done to it. Have you replaced the fluids, the clutch and brake fluids and antifreeze. I live in Mount Airy MD and may be able to help with some of the small things for you . Also maybe able to show you a few things about your bike. Shortleg[Dave]
