Author Topic: Cobra Six into Six Exhaust system  (Read 1207 times)

« on: June 27, 2013, 02:04:37 PM »

I recently purchased my Valkyrie and have been contemplating an exhaust change from my original to a 'Cobra six into six' system. I have a couple of questions that I hoped someone here could shed some light on for me:
1) I never see any pictures of the 6 into 6 with the hard storage bags still on the bike. Do the storage bags have to be removed and left off in order to offer clearance for the triple exhaust pipes on each side?
2) Are there any other carburettor jetting issues that accompany the change in exhaust systems that need to be addressed?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or experiences with this any of you may have Smiley

Cobra pipes fit with the saddle bags.  As far as re-jetting, its a case by case thing.  I have Cobras and have never had to re-jet.  It ran at a perfect mixture once I went to a K&N air filter though.

Some of us think the Cobras give the best sound.  Some say they reduce HP a couple ponies. I have not found that to be obvious.  I have ridden several Valkyries and mine is as strong or stronger than any I have ridden.

+1 on not rejetting, I have an '01 with cut down cobras and a K&N with prefilter. It did not require rejetting. I ordered a set of  baffles from Cobra,(they only make one style) to eliminate a high pitch resonation from 2200-2700 rpm.

I have also seen pictures with the Cobras and hard bags installed.

No you do not really have to re-jet but some did to pick up some of the lost ponies.

Now, if ya want noise, them bastards will give it to ya.

I had them and I couldn't stand all the noise on long trips.

I ended up with Viking pipes that I modified and added a steel crossover pipe.

Heres  the picture you requested

No problems with fit. This is from 4 or 5 years ago, these were unbaffled. I went back to stock for a while, now I have Cobras again, this time with baffles.

When you order your new exhaust gaskets, might want to order a few header nuts and studs, just in case, cheap insurance.

On my bike, I feel like I lost a little power going back to the Cobras, still plenty fast though.

The sound never bothers me, even for prolonged slab runs.  A few days ago the traffic was running 75-80 mph  for 90 minutes straight riding back from Vermont on 91 and the wind was a lot louder than the pipes.  Im not an advocate of exceeding the speed limit, but Its far safer to go at the prevailing rate, in my experience. The biggest hazard was when traffic started bottle necking in the passing lane due to some real nice fellas riding side by side on their motorcycles and not making it easy for people to pass them, if you know what i mean, and I think you do Grin

They will work just fine with hard or soft bags. I didn't rejet but do use a K&N air filter. If you notice some decel pop you may want your pilots 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 turns out.

Wow, thanks guys for all your technical input, and the pictures. I have only had my Valk for about a month now, but I absolutely love her. I was looking to make her growl a little more and figured the six into six was the quickest and easiest way to do that. I appreciate all your input and will make a list of all these comments so I know what to do when I take the step to give her a bigger voice out there on the the road Smiley   Evil

Check the classifieds here . Nice used sets come up fairly often in the 300-350 range. Dont let the bluing on headers ddter you, they are single walled pipes, and it happens to most, and quickly.
No need to buy new, for 1/3 price you can get excellent used set.
Be careful not to overtighten the header nuts, it doesnt take much. Be sure to check and retighten after  you ride it , the cooper gaskets dont fully seat right away. I would use a small open wrench to snug them for a good feel, too easy to oveftorgue with a socket imo. Do check them though,  not snug enough and you will be out $4.25 for each nut that falls off plus likely have a poor seal.
You will love the  cobras, based on what you are looking for!

+1 on the header nuts and the copper gaskets. It's best to buy 6 new gaskets because it's hard to get a good seal from your old ones without over tightening. Imho

Same here. I run baffled Cobras too and I wear earplugs but for the wind noise. The pipes themselves really don't bother me.
