Again, just a little bored and got to thinking. I want to get a fat tired look on the front enf and I beleive that we have a 3.5" wide front wheel. I was wondering if the front wheel on a VTX (only one that comes to mind) was wider than 3.5" and would fit. I know the fender would be the next thing.....but how cool would it look to have a 180 on the fron to go with the 200 on the back
Again just some random thoughts LOL

And as always...Thanks in Advance

Interesting that the same part number pulled for 1997 models as for all subsequent years.  I wonder if that means that when (if you could) order a replacement wheel for a '97, you get one with the larger bearing cups.

Hi Folks,

I'm interested in fitting a narrower wheel to the front of my Valk. I'm thinking that a 19" wheel from some of the Wings might be an option. I realize that getting a hold of such a wheel will just be the beginning but was just wondering if anyone else had ever tried a narrower wheel.

Thanks in Advance

I believe some folks here use the rear tire size and put it in the front on a backward rotation. Smiley
Perhaps someone else would shed light on this idea. Wink

All motorcycle tires besides having the normal prerequisite measurements

also have a suggested range of wheel width for each tire.

All that is necessary is to research what can go on your wheel, smallest

or largest. There is a lot to work with and still be within specifications.

Really, the OE 150 valk front tire is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) front tire on any standard motorcycle.  I have had a number of riders walk up and declare..... holy cow, your front tire is bigger than my back tire.

You should let function guide your choices, not form.

I believe the VTX 1800 and valk use the identical size tires, but doubt the wheels are interchangeable.

I really like car tires on the back, but am pretty sure I don't want one on the front. crazy2

There was a post a year or two ago from some fellow that had a Goldwing size tire mounted up front on his Valk.  He posted pics of it.  I wish I had saved those pics.....it looked seriously strange....and small....especially with the Valks front fender.

Don't remember how he said it handled.

The Goldwing does not have a large front tire .

  75-79 GL 1000 uses                       3.50H19
  80-81 GL 1100                           110/90-19
  82-83 GL 1100                           120/90-18
  84-87 GL 1200                           ??????????
  88-    GL 1500/Gl 1800                 130/70-18

  Sorry I dont have the 1200 spec  . I have seen it listed as MT90B16 ,110/90-16 and 130/90-16 .

With any of these GL wheel/tire combos, I think you open a can of works fitting brakes to the phat gurl.

I have mounted a Continental radial sport touring tire for the GL1800 on my Interstate for a narrower and lower profile. It seems to work just fine.

Thanks for the responses Folks!

I've called my Valk my every day rider since 2001. I'll never understand why they didn't continue past 2003 except for one reason, that pig of a front tire.

Here in Central Oregon we're addicted to our studded tires and can't seem to muster the political gumption to tax them sufficiently to pay for the damage they cause to our roads. I've got more than a few riders to choose from and I can tell you that none of them follow (wallow in) the ruts like my Valk does.

Last October I purchased a 2006 Roadliner S. It's powerful, perhaps not as powerful as the Valk but I can tell you that it out handles the Valk with respect to turnin effort and cornering stability, by FAR! I'm already running a Two Brothers triple clamp which has reduced my trail from 6" to 4.5". This was a big improvement, but now that I have the Roadliner, I can afford to layup the Valk while I get to work on fitting a new front wheel.

Thanks to OnaWingandaPrayer for posting those front wheel sizes. I'll get started looking for a 19" wheel right away. I'm a fair machinist so I'm sure I can fabricate any spacers I might need for the axel and brake disks. As far as the fender goes, I'm thinking of something along the lines of the VTX.

Regards

Bill , the early GL1000 has a wire spoke wheel with aluminum rim . Then they changed up to the Honda COMSTAR wheel . If your not familiar with that one, it is a multi piece stamped aluminum spoke that is riveted to the hub and rim  .

I think the early wire spoke would look cool . Also you could lace up a 16" rim if that gives you more tire width options.

You could probably fit a 180 tire on the front rim although it's pretty big for the rim.

I think your only problem will be finding a tire that's a 17"

Chance are the fender will have to go.

And it would be best to measure between the forks to be sure there's room for the tire.

It is the rim you are looking for, not a tire?

I would look over the Shadows, there are quite a few different designs and styles to look over. Problem would be in the dual caliper on the GL1500.

I would look for something with the same axle size, and you mentioned you could make spacers if need to compensate for the different in the rim width.

The ACE Tourer has 11 spokes. The Sabre if I remember is more like the Valk. Look up the stock tire size to find out the inside and outside diameter of the tire.

If you change the front rim, and go to a larger or smaller diameter tire than the stock Valk, the speedometer will change. How you will be able to fix this I don't know.

Tire size for the GL1200: Front 130/90-16, rear 150/90-15.

I noticed on a friend's Valk with an OEM size Bridgestone front that it seemed fatter than any others I've seen. Really filled up the fender.

Just reviving this thread...I have since put a 170/60-17 on the stock Valkyrie front wheel...cleared the fender just fine...I would like a stock wheel widened a couple of inches to do a 200 in the front to go with the 205 car tire on the rear

All front s fit all Valkyries. Honda probably stopped making the early version, so now only the later version is available

I want a lace wheel in the front.....widened with a 200 on it. I guess I would be happy with any wider than stock with a 200. On my caar I ran a 275 tire on a 7" rim...but dont want to push my luck going any wider than a 170 on the stock front wheel

Looks like they may specialize in metal. Kosman used to do it but they now have a company Custom Metal Spinning....might give them a call and see what they want for it...guess it will come down to do I or dont I want to send the money...for a 17x5.5 or 17x6 for a 200 front tire.

I will be sticking with the 170/60 on the stock front wheel...didnt have as much room as I thought I did.

Just as well...pretty pricey...
