Is the temp light supposed to come on when you turn the key or just when the coolant is too hot?

On my I/S the oil light the temp light and the neutral light come on with the key. The temp light goes out after a short time leaving the oil light and neutral light on. After start up the oil light goes out after the oil pump makes pressure. The neutral light goes out when I put er in gear. Even in 100+ degree days last summer the fan would come on but I never got an overheat light. Even while waiting on long lights to change.  2funny Hope this is of some help to you.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I have a '98 Standard Valk. The coolant temp light is designed to stay off until there is an overheating condition. This is a really, really dumb design as one doesn't know if the warning light system is malfunctioning until it is too late.

The only solution is to install a gauge, which is exactly what I am going to do.

The temp lite on my 2k std.started blinking one day it didn't come on steady.I pulled over and noticed the fan wasn't working, replaced a blown fuse and it poped right away.after a cool down I made home without a boilover.I found that the plastic shroud had worked it's way into the fan and caused the fan to pop a fuse.

Since it never boiled over I got the the impression that blinking was a warning, and if the lamp is on full your about to really overheat.I could be wrong since I've had no other problems with either valk.
I went almost 30 miles with no fan that warm day split lanes and snuck thru a few red lights just to keep moving the just started blinking again as I hit the driveway,no steam or coolant smell, never lost a drop.
What a machine are our valks!

Had the light come on while riding my '97 Tourer. Bike wasn't overheating but light would turn on and go off again intermittently for about an hour or so until I got home. After doing some investigating, found it was a faulty temperature indicator unit (located behind the left side panel). Put in a new one and haven't had an issue since. Apparently it was an issue with the first couple of model years of the Valkyrie.
