Bringing the bike in tomorrow to get worked on.  Going to have him look at the petcock since it appears to need replacing.  I haven't ordered one yet since it was working fine when I was in my "ordering" phase.  If he tells me it needs replacing, I'd like to try to buy one locally if anyone has a spare on the shelf.  Let me know and I can reach out likely the beginning of the week if I need it.  Thanks.

You don't normally replace the whole petcock. Most do a cover set rebuild. I just replace the "innards".  Don't have a spare kit onhand but the repair kit is what you need.

My answer is still the same.  Don't need a complete new petcock to solve the problem. The diaphram probably has a pinhole in it. A cover set includes a new set of diaphrams, a new spring, etc to restore the petcock function.

So saving a new thread, amend the query to a repair kit.

Also, where do you buy these?  Still will likely need it.  Want to fix it now to avoid issues on my upcoming trip.

Bought one from this guy:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-GL1500-VALKYRIE-97-04-PETCOCK-REBULID-KIT-NEW-/231012001854?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c963683e&vxp=mtr

New petcock also available:

But since the 60's I've been turning off the fuel, on the trike I used a Pingle petcock.

This is the one I use - it does not have the metal outside covers, only the parts that wear.  Used it on two different Valks with good results

Old Bike Barn also carries Pingel petcocks, should you want to go in that direction.

I ordered a cover set for mine (for when its needed), also ordered the intank screen. While you're at it and going on a trip, change the screen filter. I agree with Mark, the inside kit will fix the hydrolock worries.
