 Good afternoon
i was rear ended last wednesday, the bike has been written off--i walked away fatlady was carried in Many of my friends say i should buy her back from the insurance ,she is toast from the motor back  My questions ,is this a project worth considering, are written off bikes worth the trouble ,are used parts plentiful and reasonable
Thanks

I would think depending on what you can get it for, it may be worth buying even if just for parts.
Good used Valks can be found for a decent price though.

Depends on your definition of "used parts plentiful and reasonable".  You will get your settlement of the written off bike, use a small portion of that and buy it back, sell or use the parts yourself.  I have done it, and it pays off  most of the time.  Glad you weren't injured.  Hoser    Smiley

will the title be stamped as a salvage some states if the original owner buys it from the insurance company it isn't marked salvage and you can rebuild it then someday sell it with no hassles but if it is selling a salvage title bike dosent bring current market value when selling it in the future

Insurance totaled mine and I bought it back for $500 , All it needed was some cosmetics , filled a few dents and painted , new fairing , few odds and ends. You shouldn't have to pay much . I'd buy it and sell parts .I forgot to add earlier that it has a clean title since the insurance company never took possession of it .

Sorry to hear about that. and also sorry that you are so far away. I am looking for a crashed, rear ended Valk to build another trike for my son. Do not care about salvage title or replacing parts from seat back will fab all myself. As long as it runs. If you buy back maby we could find out what it would cost to ship. Get in touch with me. Either way you go the main thing is you walked away !  Thank God for that !  From the sounds the damage the Valk had - I'd say you're a very lucky guy !
Glad you're alive and well !

Now when the bean has cleared a bit ,nothing it's as if i have a bad smell-Thanks for the kind thoughts ,will let  everyone know the insurance company and i decide

Glad you came through it okay.  I'm always paranoid about that.

I've been curious about putting this engine in something else... go kart, lawnmower, bathtub... Depending on what the insurance would want, you've got a good opportunity to experiment...

Hi Terry, hope it all ended well, not to hurt are you?

I wrote my IS off, bought it back, and parted it out. After the fact, I wish I kept it, and bought a BRAND new frame for $1500.

I bought the bike, home from Las Vegas in 2010 for $7100. Insurance paid me $10K + taxes (so I could buy something else). Bought the bike back for $2K. Have sold most parts, documented and spread sheeted, and have over $6K from sales. I could have been more agressive and sold for more $, but was happy selling at reasonable and fair prices.

I needed a whole front end, maybe buy for $1500, + the frame, + the salvage price, so for $5K would be back driving my IS with a clean title.

Terry,

I had my 00' Valk Interstate about 2 months when it was rear ended by another motorcycle....

Al of mine was cosmetic, with some damage to the right exhaust..... BUT the Bike was still ridable..

Because of all the broken plastic, the Insurance Co totaled it. I never let them take possession and they reduced the amount of the settlement by the salvage value of the bike at that time.... about $1600... SO I had a clear title.. So if you are interested in keeping the bike do not sign the title over to them. Once you sign it over to them and buy it back it most likley will then be a salvage title...

I got almost $10k from them and replacing broken parts.. some used, some new and repaired what i could cost me about $2800,,,,

So in my case I have about $4800 into my bike and am still riding it.... teh rest paid for new bling and alot of bills...LOL

How trashed is the rear end? Is it an Interstate or standard? What was the costly items that totaled it?

If the frame is straight, and you get a clear title, it might be worth it to repair, but as others said,,, the motor, tank and front end could net you about $2-3K easy.

Hope it works out, but you are in Canada, so things might be ALOT different than the states.

Just saw your post..

Fight em hard... don't settle and you could get it appraised for cheaper than you think...... Some bike shops might do it for free if they think they might get some of the repair work, etc.

Originally my INS. Co. wanted to give me $7k!!!!!!!

After I pointed out the add ons and extras and what they were worth, and showed then the current replacement costs, they came back with $9900.....

Dont let the adjuster shyster ya... thats what their job is!!!!

Honestly man. That much damage and you walked away. God had his best angel riding with you when this happened. You are a blessed man.

Buy it back. A local Valkyrie rider here has done this three times to the same bike. Currently he is up money from State Farm and riding a free bike. It does look like it, but he has 130,000 miles on it now. We call it the Rat Bike. The only his time ride is washed is when he is caught in the rain.

Do you have a motorcycle group to help out after accidents, like we do in BC?

http://www.bccom-bc.com/

I think I would go to a lawyer first, with the kind of "help" you are getting from your insurer.

It doesn't hurt to say, "Ok, if that's what you say my Valkyrie is worth, find me SEVERAL at that price that I can choose from."  That's how I got em to up my offer to a very reasonable figure--because they couldn't find ANY at the figure they first offered me.

On a related note, my insurance, Progressive, pays 100% replacement cost on anything deemed an accessory or not OEM including riding gear and equipment with no deductible on that stuff.

8500 seems reasonable for an I/S, I'd settle for that.  If a std. or tourer, you done good.

Not offering advice on buying it back, your call and your decision  Personally, I wouldn't buy it back but I don't have the time nor means nor know-how to put it all back together nor the place to put all the parts on the Valk to sell them outright, would take too long to do not worth it to me.

Cookie dough
your right it is a decent offer , the appraisal changed his offer after the local Honda dealer gave me a figure of $8499 on his floor. He gave me 8450 minus the sales tax .  They offered me 7499 plus tax =$8473 When i buy a bike used or new i pay the sales tax. In al likely hood i will be forced to take their bid.
Regardless last summer i turned down $9000 ,as we all know a fatlady all polished and pretty stops traffic I told the guy at 61 it was my last bike and i wasn't ready to sell
I walked away from a motorcycle accident and yes i was blessed , it cost me $1000, because i was in the wrong place at the wrong time I can think of a 1000 things i could spend that money on. i did  receive  1000 worth of knowledge out of this,do not trust your own insurance company ,the other insurance company or anyone giving advice . I suggest join a motorcycle club which has legal representation in your state or province wherever . Contact your lawyer first,i thought my insurance company was on my side , don't talk to them until advised by legal representation That bit of knowledge cost me $1000 and i am forwarding it for free

Well !--received my cheque yesterday just over $9100 My last bid was as was suggested here ,give me a list  of the bikes i could buy for what you are offering. They said that offer was the last they were giving ,i suggested if they didn't come up in their offer, i would leave the bike at the Honda dealer @$60/day until Jesus returned Later in the day they split the difference with me
For me to buy it back --salvage was $800, for me  it was $1800 ,part of my settlement in Ontario was i received the tax paid on the insurance settlement . I thought i was being cute and waited until i had my cheque in hand ,had my neighbour  make a bid for $800.No dice ,he was required to have a wrecker's licence . My fat lady is history ,i have a sore back ,sore hip and a promise of a new helmet
I appreciate everyone's input,it helped a lot
Cheers
