Both these routes come highly recommended

Wisconsin: Approx 90 miles one way

I can speak for the WI route especially around Wildcat Mountain State Park being very nice well worth it to enjoy the hills and bluffs.  Highly recommended.  Most are all good roads in that area.

I know the minnesota route some of 16 is being resurfaced so keep that in mind its more near preston

I already picked the 33 route out of my Wisconsin Red Book... If you go a little farther you
can get to Bugaboo or Baraboo or somesuch, probably get lunch... a tiny bit further and
you can get into Devil's Lake State Park and maybe swim...
