WOW

What a roller coaster it has been. When I bought my Valk a year ago, it had a 205/55/16 Uniroyal Tiger Paw mounted on the rear, and a Dunlop Elite 3 (OEM size) mounted on the front.

I've had a BAD wobble in corners and at high speed ever since I bought the bike. I replaced worn out shock bushings. Installed NEW 12.5'' Progressive 440s....stopped a front fork leak (using the 35mm film trick) and torqued the steering head bearings. Increased tire pressure in the Uniroyal to 44psi...

I still had a dangerous wobble....

When changing lanes, high speed, cornering...nothing seemed to solve it.

I blamed the Uniroyal CT. And I blamed it because it was a CT. SO....I recently bought (brand new) Shinko SE890 for the front and rear. OEM sizes. I purchased them from Motorcycle Superstore website.

I had a local MC shop mount and balance the Shinkos for me. I installed the shinkos and took the bike on her maiden MC tire voyage. It was then that I noticed I had a terrible vibration from 35mph-45mph. I put the bike back up on the jack, spun the rear wheel and noticed the rear shinko was terribly "out of round."

I was crushed. I spent days on the phone with Motorcycle Superstore and they finally agreed (upon seeing the video below) that they would send me a NEW SE890 Shinko rear.

I liked how the shinko MC tires handled....but the vibration was killer. Too much. So I did some Car Tire polling and research. I found a review of the Pirelli P4 by RioWil. He claimed he got 60k miles out of the tire, and loved the way it handled. Good enough for me.....I felt drawn back to the dark side.

The Pirelli P4 All Seasons 205/65/16 is incredible. I dismounted the shinko, and mounted the Pirelli myself using tire irons. This was a LABOR of love. It was not easy, but I did it. Breaking the bead on the shinko wasnt too tough, because the tire was still soo new.

It took 40lbs PSI to seat the pirelli P4. I cleaned up the rear wheel, lubed and serviced the final drive, and installed the Pirelli.

It corners like a BEAST. AWESOME. It grips HARD and there is absolutely NO MORE dangerous wobble!!! The 65 height is sooooo much better for ME than the 55. At 65mph Im running 3000 RPM (or a little less)

It feels like a different bike. In a GOOD way. For now, Im going to leave the SE890 Shinko on the front. It has no defects at this point. I sure do love this new Pirelli. I do not see myself ever installing that Shinko MC superstore will be sending me. Im DS for life.

Here's the video of the "out of round" shinko SE890 rear. Ignore my wife using a SKILL saw in the background. Shes a keeper. Thats another story though:

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I just put a set of Shinko SE 890's on too. Had the same vibration in the 30 to 40 mph range as you described and the rear was out of round just like yours was. Video'd it and ordered another Shinko to replace the defective one. Put the new tire on and it is OK on being round but still have some vibration in the same mph range. First tire packaged up and ready to ship back in the morning for warranty. I'm thinking that the Shinko's tread must just be noisy and vibrate at that speed as I checked ujoint and final drive on first install and they were fine. I had the same experience with Metzler's  few years back as far as the vibration thing, they wore decent but were just noisy especially when cornering. Running dynabeads so I'm satisfied balance isn't an issue. One thing I did notice is the Shinko does sit a little higher as it has a well rounded profile and seems to handle corners great. only put 150 miles on first tire before pulling and replacing it but I'm hoping for good long term results as the last 4 Avon Cobra rears have delaminated on me out on the road with plenty of tread left.

Valkhound:

thanks for the reply. Im sorry for your luck. Im glad it wasnt "just me!"

I wanted Avon Cobras....but couldnt spring the $$ for no more miles than I'd expect to get. I like to RIDE a LOT and cant justify a new rear tire every year at $200 per tire.

I definitely figured out the RIGHT car tire makes a huge difference.

i have a rear shinko that is out of round as well and i ended up putting a tripletred on to replace it and still the shinko sitting the garage chapparelle gave me too hard a time and i wasnt about to be tireless for weeks while they shipped the tire to shinko for warranty,,,, and incidently ive noticed a little vibrsation in the bars at 55mph with my front shinko almost like a hum.....does yours do that? i checked my wheel bearings when i had her apart for spring maintinence and they seemed good . oklahoma that's is exactly how my tire looked too i wish i  would have thought of videoing it.

Justin I do have an odd slight vibration at highway speed still. I can only feel it in my highway pegs though. Its slight enough that I can live with it. It started when I installed the shinkos. I probably wont be buying another shinko tire ever again.

Thanks for the reply and ride safe

I do have the vibration too ,not bad but you can feel it in the floorboards. I really think it's just the nature of the Shinko  and their tread design. I had an out of round Dunlop that I bought from Chaparral a while back that was obvious as soon as  I took it out for the first ride. Called Chaparral and had to send the tire back in for warranty but I also ordered another one first so I wouldn't have to wait on the warranty claim. I'm happy to say they took care of warrenty and credited back the cost of the tire and mounting cost in a timely manner.I've had good service out of Chaparral taking care of any problems that I've had. You just have to wait for the tire manufacturer to take care of the claim.

good to know im not alone with the hum from the front.... next time ill prolly bite the bullet and get a meztler thats what was on her when i bought her but im quite happy with the d/s on the rear. as for chapparelle the kid i had on the phone sounded to be about 16 and had no idea what to do and kept putting me on hold to talk to his boss after the 4th time i just hung up. it was like theyd never heard of a tire being out of round....i also wasnt happy with the shop i had mount the tires 35 bucks each to mount and balance(the only reason i had someone else do it was for the balancing i cant do that at work on our machine) and they didnt even notice or mention that the tire took a lot of weight or that the weights were right across from each other(dead give away for an out of round tire)i guess i just expect from others what i give when they are paying me to do a job. i want it done right. rant over lol anyhow when i mounted my d/s i used balance beads and they have been great a bit of a PITA to install but smooth sailing ever since.
