What is the difference between the Interstate Rear caliper and the Standard and Tourer?
IS is discontinued and the Standard is not.  They look the same in a side by side comparison of the two Parts Fiche. The two part numbers are different.

I know that the color is different, but people say that it will not fit...I would like to know why?

Ah yes, I recall now. You need to keep rotor and rear rims as a set ie: std rotor with std rim, i/s rotor with i/s rim. Otherwise the caliper mount rubs the rotor and you have to swap the rim out or use a 1/16th spacer for alignment. other than that i have never heard of an issue.

I have a Tourer and in a box I have an IS rear caliper(spare). It's painted black. I don't think the calipers are different, but the wheel/rotor setup is different.

Comparing the Honda Parts Fiche every part is interchangeable between the IS and the Standard, except the Caliper and the Brake pads.
All of the rear wheels and Rotors have the same part Numbers thru the years. I don't get it.

I put 06435-MBY-671 Honda brake pads for an Interstate on both my I/S and my STD two years ago. I saw no difference between the used STD pads I took off and the new I/S pads that I put on. 06435-MBY-671 for the I/S were $26.00 The 06435-MZO-006 for the STD were $41.00.  Shocked

The Interstate rear calipers are black and have smaller pistons. Tourer and Standard
calipers are just alike. I almost tried an Interstate caliper on my Tourer once, but I
chickened out, don't know if it would work.

The rotor and rim issue is not for the caliper, but the alignment to the caliper horizontally (left-right).

Sorry, just to double check--will any Valkyrie rear wheel with rotor fit any model?  I just bought a rear wheel from a standard or tourer and I have an IS.  Thanks (sorry if this is considered highjacking this thread).  Thanks again.

It seems to me that the only way that you will find out is to attempt to mount the wheel and rotor. Some guys say it will fit and some say it will not...

1. 1997-1999 std
2. 2000-2003 std
3. 1999-2001 I/S

1 = std wheel - raw finish - rotor will fit 1,2
2 = std wheel - polished and clear coated - rotor will fit 1,2
3 = I/S wheel - rotor will fit 3 only.

Valk1520 will need a standard rotor to match his std wheel.

And yet the Honda Parts Fiche claims that they are all interchangeable. The only thing that is not is the IS Caliper..

So what does a guy do who wants to replace the IS caliper?

Do a search of this board. I think the wheels and calipers are different in that the surface that the rotor mounts to is farther out on one vs. the other, and the matching caliper accomodates this. Someone who knows for certain can correct me on this.  As far as the pads go, I think the IS came with some kind of plastic shim that could be omitted if not needed. This is also a faded memory of posts read a few years ago, so those interested can do their own searches.

OK call me stupid ,but in my ignorance I didn't know there was a difference in the calipers and I mounted an IS caliper on my 97' standard and haven't noticed any issues at all . Draw your own conclusions , have about 1000 miles since I switched em . Used the IS brake pads too .
