Just bought 99 I/s in great condition with 20500 miles. Planning on servicing  and changing all fluids and plugs and having carbs checked and sync . Question is I going to change the fluid in rear end at this point Is it necessary to tear it down and checked the splines? I am going to have a local Honda tech that has operated from his home for years do the service. The bike runs great. Thanks

The short answer is yes. You can NOT be certain the rear service has been done correctly until you see it done correctly. cooldude

As long as you'll be pulling the wheel, you might as well replace the tire if it is getting anywhere near the end of its life.  Then you wouldn't have to mess with that part of the bike for another 10K miles or so.

Drain the carbs onto a white towel and see what comes out. If it doesn't look good consider pulling the tank and ducing it out. yeah, its a pain but tiny rust particles may be collecting at the bottom of the tank. And you can pull and eyeball the petcock screen for crud too. Also get some decent grease for the splines. I use guard dog but there are others. Search is your friend. G/L
