I have a "de-smogging" in my future, but I want to have everything ready before I start. I don't want everything taken apart while I'm making the block-off plates.
Does anyone have the dimension's of the block-off plates including the holes measured from center?
Thanks.

Making plates is not necessary - there is no pressure there that needs advanced engineering.

You can simply snip off the tubes leaving enough to crimp and bend over if you like.

That's what I did.

I'm with Ricky on this, no need to get into all that. I just cut them back near the point where the tubes go vertical and fill the end with some JBWeld of the instant variety. It usually will run down into the tube a bit but is hardened by the time I'm done with the rest of the job. Before buttoning it all up, I also crimp/bend the ends....kinda overkill but still do it. By doing the methods we've detailed here, you don't have to pull the exhaust to get at that spot underneath to install a block off plate.

I appreciate the reply(s). I'm sure your method works fine, and is easier to do... but I'd rather use the block-off plates. I don't mind the extra work.

OK, use plates but you will be messing with them leaking periodically.

Do the way John said, and if ya do it right the 1st time, you no mess with it later.

I desmogged MGM just like John suggested, so long ago I don't remember the year and I have yet to touch them for anything.    I like doing it once and then forget about it.

Darrel makes a desmog kit. Removing all the chrome tubes sure cleans the engine up. Some people thread the hole and install a plug instead of a plate. I just so happen to have a gasket in my truck, but I can't post pics on here with my phone. PM me your cell # and I'll text you pics of it with dimensions.

I cut the tubes off the bottom about 1" away from the "foot" that bolts to the bottom of the head. Smashed the end flat, folded it back about 3/16" then welded it over with the MIG. No fuss, no muss, & no leaks in over 75,000 combined miles using this method.  cooldude

Not necessarily ... I have used plates in 2004 ... and ... knock on wood ... no leaks yet.  Cool

Just reuse the gasket, if good, or make new gaskets and there is no more chance of a leak than the original installation.
