hello friends,
I replaced my wheel bearings (front and back) a few thousand miles ago and I began to notice some strange noises coupled with a binding sensation from the rear tire. I removed the rear tire to find that the nuts from the drive flange had loosened and come off, grinding the aluminum gear case cover and breaking off two small pieces around the final gear set.
I need some help figuring out how much of the final drive and rear wheel assembly I need to replace. The axle seems to be free of damage as well as the rear wheel bearings, but I am thinking that I should replace most of the final drive assembly to be on the safe side.
thanks, k

When you removed the wheel last time, did you remove or loosen those nuts?

I have the same question as Chris. I've never heard of those coming loose.
Anyway, with that much damage I'd be looking for a used final drive.

Same question, same reaction....never heard of them coming loose. There's no need to remove them to begin with, the entire flange slips out of the wheel but sometimes a little force with a couple screwdrivers are are needed. One of the big reasons for having a shop manual is to make sure you're doing it right.

I had it happen last september on my way to Ohio from ND. Started leaking a little rear end fluid. Thought the seal went out. When I got to JetDrivers in Ohio, we took it apart, and found out a nut had broken out a piece of the rear end. We "fixed" it with JB weld!
We were unable to put one of the bolts back in, too buggered up. So, left it out. Rode it home from Ohio.
I took that bike 4977 miles to Ohio and back for the VOAI Reunion this summer. No oil leak, just fine!
I have a rear end that is trashed. I plan on taking off the side cover from that, and replacing that on the broken casing. Might need a new gasket.
I have over 6,000 miles on the "fixed" rear end!

I would be curious if any one,/some/all of these bikes had replaced the stock flange dampeners with the new 'upgraded' version someone was selling on this list some time back??

how do ya do it? We must be careful here I can only imagine a friendly "What's the best oil ? " debate being taken over by these signs.

Same as a picture. Save the gif file in photobucket (or other on line storage) and paste the same as a picture in your post.
