Why use 15w50 and not 10w40. The manual calls for 10W40 so why are people using the 15W50 mobil 1 instead. Are there any benefits to this. ???

This is my understanding:
The Mobil 1, 10w40 is a motorcycle specific oil and good for a wet clutch.  The 15w50 is a diesel engine oil and also compatible with a wet clutch.  The auto version of the Mobil 1, 10w40 is not compatible with a wet clutch.  The diesel engine oil is significantly cheaper than the motorcycle specific oil.

I have use the automotive 10/40 many times, no problems.  Also use the the 15/50.  It's all in which one is on sale.  Neither one has the additives harmful to a clutch.  Hoser   Smiley

Thanks guys for the info. If you go to Mobil's website you can print $10.00 coupons for any Mobil 1 oil at autozone. Every little bit helps. cooldude

50 weight oils for the most part also quiet down most engine noises a bit more..
I use 20w-50 in all my bikes and the trike here in Florida.
90 degree days and 35 miles an hour my fans are on a lot.
