That was the same guy that checked your liscence plate number (you don't know yours either do you). My agent had to check my plate for me too. Looks like they'd have a camera to do that so that they don't have to walk around behind you to do that. Maybe if I find a suggestion box next trip across I'll mention it.
My crossing went fairly easily.
He asked if I had any weapons. no He then listed weapons I might have and not be thinking of: pepper spray, mace, pocket knives, guns, small guns, long guns, switch blades. still no. then he asked if I was sure. He wanted to know if I had anything for personal defense, which might be okay I just needed to tell him. Still no. Then he asked how long I was going to be in Canada. I said a day or two. My wife clarified that we were staying two nights. He didn't bat an eye that I didn't know or care what we were doing. He may have asked about weapons again. Then he told me to have a nice trip.
A lot easier than your experience.

Next time they ask you if you've got any firearms, don't look around and say....what do you need. -RP

Gee, when we crossed into Canada no one asked me about weapons. The guy wanted to know if I had anything with me except my personal clothing. I said yes, he asked what, and I got ready to start listing ... laptop computers.... he stopped me there. Asked my plate number, I had to get off to get it. He asked "where is it plated?" I felt like saying "on the rear fender, obviously" but figured that wasn't what he wanted to know. FINALLY, he said "what state?" Oh, Texas. Same as on the passport.
I think he thought I was really a blonde.

I had a lot more questions posed to me by the American border guard. The American side fellow asked why I was coming to America. My answer, "I live here."

On my crossing at the Falls, I was asked about weapons. After the nice young lady went down the list, I told her I had a crescent wrench that I could beat somebody to death with. She wasn't amused, but she let me in.

Canada announced this AM that Czechs and Mexicans now need visas to visit Canada - the Czechs withdrew their Ambassador in response.

Border Patrol can be pretty humorless but if you get a friendly one who likes motorcycles it takes longer to get through the check point. The danged dogs make me nervous, too, with all that walking around. I wish they would just sit still.

I know it's not a border crossing story, but similar circumstances.... Barely a year after 9/11, my wife was flying back to Singapore to visit family. Naturally she was bringing all kinds of American goodies to share, See's candy, hot cocoa mix, various other sweets, and of course at that time airport security was extremely uptight and serious. Small airport here in Santa Barbara, not many other passengers at the time, security guy opens up her suitcase and glimpses at the gigantic amount of goodies. Expressionless. He grabs one of those wipes that look like what you get after eating a bucket of chicken and starts silently dabbing around in and out of the suitcase. I break the silence and ask: "Exactly what does that test for?" His deadpan response: "Traces of chocolate".
