Had a smallish accident a few weeks ago that required that the tank get repaired and painted.... of course I had to take off the petcock.... went to reinstall the tank last night and when I did so, the petcock does not turn very easilyor should I say hardly at all, without wiggling, jostling etc etc... seems to be stuck in one of  the "dents" for either ON/ OFF/ RES (not sure which).  I had rebuilt it with the kit just two seasons ago... and it was functioning perfectly prior to the accident...

The questions are; does the fuel somehow make it work? I didn't notice this happening after the rebuild...Or do I need to try and create a vac by cranking the motor over... I just don't want to add fuel to the tank and then have to drain it again or cause hydrolock.....

OR should I just bite the bullet and get a Pingle? OR  just rebuild the Honda petcock again?

Your thoughts / advise appreciated.

Sorry it's been so long since I've been on the board... life " what a long strange trip it's been"

Are you turning via the attached knob on the bike?

If so, try disconnecting that and reaching under and turning it directly. If it moves easily, you just have it twisted in the tank somewhat and it's not lining up with the handle. Puts it in a bind.

Also, you can put tank on it,s side wit petcock up
to work on it if you have gas in it.

It's easy to crossthread the knob into the petcock.  I speak with the voice of experience.  crazy2

No cross threading problems and I'm using the knob to try and turn it from position to position... not the metal of the petcock itself

ticking me off ... thought I'd have it fired back up by tonight...

I´d try it first without the knob. It´s easy, to have it misaligned.....

Along the same lines as Udo mentions, I reinstalled my petcock once so that it wasn't inline with the plastic chrome OEM switch.  I had to turn the petcock a bit to have them better align.

Try removing the bolt that brackets the switch to the engine hanger and let the bracket/arm swing down.  This will allow your switch "hang free" & to move to the angle of least resistance to your petcock.  If after removing the bolt the switch works much easier, you will need to pivot your petcock so that it is better aligned with your switch.  After you've got it aligned, make sure to put the bolt back in so your switch is braced again.

I've search... but can't seem to find a current model number for the Pingle that works on the vacume.... I just don't trust myself to remember to shut the valve every single time I stop riding....

Hate to be a pain in the arse here, but since you asked the question, have you tried any of the suggestions other than finding a pingle?

If not, take the SOB apart and and see if it is gummed up, if it is, clean it up. make sure it turns freely, if it does, put it in the tank and then work on getting it lined up correctly.......

You mentioned tank work and the petcock off for the job, have you tried putting a little fuel in it? fuel does tend to lube it internelly  Smiley  Just a thought.   Cool

Thank you all... I tried all of the suggestions... ie alignment, turning with pliers etc...

Took the petcock off.. and it was still kinda stuck... tried gentle, but it took firmly twisting it back and forth and it did break loose ... but is still not smooth like before... the problem is not in the diaphram section but rather where the shaft goes into the petcock.... never seen this happen to a petcock before... oh well!

ordered a new Honda one this morning...  I just don't want a manual valve...

Thanks again for the suggestions...

I see that you've already ordered the Honda, but just for reference for folks looking at this in the future:
1311-CHV is the vacuum version, 1311-CH is the manual.
Sorry to hear you're going with the stock.  I've replaced a perfectly good (or at least as good as it gets) stock petcock with a Pingel.  If you can still cancel your order, I would recommend you do so.
