I just bought a 98 standard with 5500 miles on it, the first owner had removed the passenger backrest. I am trying to put it back on The backrest bracket mounting holes are a little over 2 inches from center to center the bolts on the sides of the fender are a whole lot farther a part than that what do you mount the back rest to. If I did not make this clear please let me know. Thanks for any help. I did do a search and nothing came up on this problem. This bike was great find Rice Honda in Rapid City sold it to the man in 98 he had more than one bike and did not ride it much. They just got it in a few days before I got it. I have a great bike just broke in.

I have a Cobra fender rail, don't let that throw you, its not relevant to your question... The vertical "ears" coming off the fender rail is where the back rest mounts. It is possible to take the ears off. Maybe the first owner took them off, leaving you with no obvious place to put your back rest bracket? -Mike

It has a chrome rail on it not as nice as yours with the one bolt going though the fender but what does the second hole on the bracket bolt to. You put the front hole on the bracket on the back bolt of the rail what is the second hole on your bracket go to as even on yours there is not a hole though the rail or the fender. Is that clear The ears were on the back rest that had been removed.

Is that clear The ears were on the back rest that had been removed. That bolt hole is for the rear fender section... I take my rear fender section off when I change tires... You're on the right track now... you may find that the original owner changed out your fender rail with an Interstate fender rail. Interstates don't have the ears, so their rails don't need the slot/cut-out for the ears... the motivation for the change-out of the rails would be "for looks". Most of us Tourer/STD guys who remove the sissy bar fix "the looks" by leaving the ears and finishing them off with a solo bar like in my picture. -Mike

Look at the picture Bone posted. Look at the top edges of #6 and #7 (fender rails), on the inside that faces the fender, near the back ends. Each piece has a notch about 1/8"-3/16" wide by 2-3" long. This is where the "ears" go. If your fender rails don't have these notches, yours are from an Interstate, and you'll need to find a pair from a Standard or Tourer.

They just got it in a few days before I got it. I have a great bike just broke in. Wolf....what a great find.....but if you are not familiar with these bikes, I have bad news for you.......at 5500 miles this beast isn't any where near broken in.....now when it hits the 100,000 mile mark you are getting close. If you know about these bikes, you know I am just jerking your chain......there is a list of bikes on this site with about 30-40 phat girls with between 100,000 and 450,000 miles. So, again, what a great find and keeping breaking her in.......

Thanks for all the replys my wife saids she will not ride this one very much so I think I will set it up for solo riding. Thanks Rio for the comments I did have a Tourer a long time ago and was really dumb and got let it go. I think I will keep this one for a short while at least for 95,000 miles to see if it rides better when as Rio said it is broken in at 100,000 miles . Thanks for all your help I most likely will be asking a lot more questions as I am learning, I did put 76,000 miles on its big brother a 1500 Goldwing. So should have a lot of fun riding this one and making it mine.

Wolf, I just got back from Sturgis and Rice Honda had a yellow/cream Valk that had real low miles on it, can't remember exactly, but 5,500 sounds like it. It looked real good. Is that the one you got? Gary

We went to Rice Honda/Victory for a new tire on my buddies Victory. So, we were there for a couple of hours. I was able to look at every bike in the show room. I saw that Valk and looked at it for quite a while. It looked real good, couldn't believe it had that low of mileage. Hope you like it and get many miles of good times on it. I've got a 97 Standard with 125,000 miles on it, and I got an Interstate last summer. Take some trips and go on the state numbered roads, best thing I've ever done in my life. Congratulations on your purchase, one fine Valk.

So, Wolf13, are you from around the Hills? I took early retirement from the RCFD to pursue other career options but alway remember the Black Hills with fondness. We passed through the Hills on I90 during the Rally on our way to a family reunion in eastern South Dakota this year.

No I was born and rasied on a farm in western KY Moved to Nashville and worked for the city for 26 yrs. My wife and I started coming out here on vacation 13 yrs ago, started looking at houses 5 yrs ago and bought one 2 yrs ago, Metro got tired of me working for them an said they would pay me to leave so I retired and Moved to a place just outside Keystone in May. We came up here for 10 of those 13 yrs on our Goldwing until I messed my back up again and had to stop riding for a while. This is my first bike since I stopped and it is really great to be back on 2 wheels on a bike as good as this one Riding the great roads in the Black Hills. Sometimes dreams to come true it just takes a while.
