Well I am ready to tackle this job on my IS. it has been acting up on occasion. my question is can I do this by splitting the control cover like shop talk says or do I have to remove the whole throttle side for access? and again thanks for any info!

no need to remove anything but the switch internals....split the housing and remove the switch.  Just make sure the brass contacts are bouncy (spring up and down when you press on them with a finger) if the contacts are stuck you will be doing this again soon

Thanks Chrisj! I had saw your post about this being a 10 min. job and was hoping that you would respond. is there anything I need to do with the kill switch while I am in there? sometimes I have to flip it more than once to work?

Mine (the kill switch) did that once so I sprayed WD-40 in it and worked it a few times.......I just planned on that as a quick fix but It never acted up again and I never did a tear down and cleaning.  Taking the kill switch out and cleaning it properly cant be too hard while you are in there but if the WD-40 thing works, hey why not

Recently I did a throttle cable lube. I know we are always talking about the starter switch dying. So when I was in there I took quick glance at starter switch. Mine looked very sealed.  I didn't pay it a lot of attention as I was working out the best way to top down lube the cables.  It's a 2003. Did it change.  Did I have it spun around, was I looking at the kill switch?

I did the switch clean up about a year ago.  Things started acting up last week.  I went back in there, it didn't look bad but I cleaned things up and adjusted the contacts.  Thought it was fixed, went to get something to eat and it took a while before I could start the bike. (about 20 times).
I ordered a new switch and have to wait till Tuesday.
Just my experience.  Might want to have one on hand.  Smiley

I ordered it from a stealer to get it faster.   around $85.
You might find it cheaper on line but it'll take longer and costs for shipping.

Did my 99 about 4 years ago.  It started acting up before Inzane this year so I replaced it.  Got 14 years out of it.  Hope the new one lasts that long.
