I have a 99 I/S with 37K on her. Early in a ride yesterday I had some problems with first gear / neutral. When I started from a stop, she kicked out of 1st into neutral and I had a heck of a time getting going. She bucked a bit while I tried to get into 1st and I wound up putting her in 2nd to get going as from the sounds of a couple of horns indicated the traffic behind me was getting impatient  Embarrassed. I immediately noticed the neutral light stayed on in all gears. My buddy and I continued the ride and after some time the neutral light would only be lit when in neutral or when letting out the clutch in 1st (e.g. not in 2nd or above).

I took about an hour ride this morning as well and the same thing is happening. I can shift fine but the neutral light stays on in first when I let out the clutch. If in first with the clutch level pulled, the neutral light is out.

I bought my I/S about a year and a half ago and the only shifting issues I have had is very rarely when shifting down into first it might take 2 tries. Again, this only happened rarely, so I never worried about it.

Is the neutral light staying on an indication of a transmission problem? What steps can a take to correct this issue?

Regards,
Greg

I can't say how deeply you'll have to go but you surely have to get inside the motor.

I believe the switch is inside a cover at the end of the transmission.

A messed up switch could have possibly caused the problems you experienced.

There have been a few posts regarding the switch over the years so the best thing to do is use the search function of the forum.

Thanks for the response. I did some searching before posting and the posts I found were the opposite symptom, with the neutral light not coming on at all. However after reading the posts more thoroughly, I did find the instructions about testing and if necessary changing the neutral switch.

The weekend after this problem happened with me I went riding again. This time no problems with the neutral light at all. I have been riding plenty since the problem occurred and it has not repeated. I am not sure of the cause or why it stopped, but decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I've been participating in this forum since 2001, and I don't recall reading about this problem before.

Its actually a common problem. Noone just really cares about it enough to do anything.

My light has stayed green while I was in gear just a couple of times over
the years.

When the light is green, not only do I think the bike is in neutral, but the bike
thinks so too... the start button is not locked out ...

You must be much more familiar with Valkyries and their common problems than I am.

I, for one, am interested in where you come up with this stuff.  Please provide addtional information and source of the "facts" that you are reporting.

The neutral switch is a simple grounding switch so if the neutral light is

staying on regardless of the gear it would be pretty simple to turn it off.

Only drawback would be the light would not illuminate thereafter.

Unplug the wire to turn the light off.

Whoa. Mine just started doing this. Whats the fix ?
99 Interstate, Shifts fine. Its just that the light is staying on.
Started out flashing a bit like a loose ground would do.

If your riding an Interstate it might be worthwhile to examine the splice block.

Look at this thread too:

His glowing neutral light was caused by the splice block and I emailed him the document to fix it.

Yes it was a pleasant surprise to see that photo at the tail end of the thread. Evil
