Changing out the crushable exhaust gaskets on the left side this morning...and yeah...you guessed it...snapped off one of the studs trying to torque things back together.  tickedoff Left it as it is while I wait on new studs and nuts to arrive. Oh well, I needed to order some other stuff also.

I suppose the best way to extract the broken stud is spray it with PB Blaster & try and grab it with some channel locks or vise grips and back it out? At least that's the plan.

Not gonna mess with it until the new parts arrive. Besides, I have to ride to Louisiana for a class next week.

I hear they're made to snap off with some sticking out, hope that's how yours broke...

I've always "snugged" them, torquing little stuff like that is hard to do right...

They need to be checked each ride after you put in new crush-gaskets, and then
they settle down...

Luckily I have not broken one, but have changed the gaskets when changing to a different exhaust a couple of times.  Tighten them just snug, then ride it to warm everything up then snug again, and do this a couple of times.  When you take out the stud with vice grips you might warm the engine first.  Seems like the torque value is real low like 6 lbs., but I just snug them up with my calibrated wrist.  Grin

Yeah...perhaps "torquing" was a bad choice of words...among other bad words I said when I did it. But it did snap off with some sticking out so I should be able to get a grasp on it.

Good advice and thanks hubs and Thunder.

About the size of it...and a torque wrench accurate at that low level is never less than $100...and needs annual calibration.

I did the same thing when changing my exhaust a few weeks ago. I gripped the exposed bolt with vice grips, and after spraying with PB blaster, I began to back it out. As I met resistance, I would screw it back in, trying to back it out a small amount each time. I did this over 3 days, as I waited this long to get my bolt. Came out simple, and I was happy.  Smiley
