MY 98 HAS AN OIL LEAK ON THE 2 EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS IN THE LEFT FRONT  CYLINDER AS THE BIKE IS PARKED.  THE ENGINE BOTTOM IS CLEAN AND DRY. THE SHIFTER SHAFT, FARTHER BACK IS DRY ALSO. THE EXHAUST HAS NO LEAKS AND IS QUIET. THE SPARK PLUG IS CLEAN AND NORMAL. WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS ?

THANKS !

Did you check the seal around the shifter shaft?

Take a close look at the intake runners where they connect to the head. After years of use, the o-rings in there have a tendency to leak and will ooze gunk that looks much like oil. If real bad, it could possibly run down the head. Or, could just be a small leak in the bottom of the valve cover or one of the cover's bolts. Don't torque those bolts down, they have a tendency to snap.
