Start Button ?

Looking for a little starter button advice.....
Came home from a ride and all of a sudden found I had to press the starter button a couple of times to get it to start. When it wouldn't start, I could hear clicking from the start relay.
Checked the battery volts - good
Jumped the starter relay with a screwdriver - alternator is good
Checked that long I shaped fuse - good
All the wires looked fine, assumed I just need to do the famous starter button cleanup. Opened up my starter button & it was clean and looked like new. Gave it a shot of WD40 as I didn't have any dielectric grease. Put it back together. Light will go out when I press it but nothing else. No relay clicks or anything.
My question is - was I stupid? Did I screw up with the WD40? Do I need to open the switch and clean out the WD40 ?
Thanks.....

You said that you "Jumped the starter relay with a screwdriver" did the bike crank and start??

Yes it does start when I jump the relay with a screwdriver.
I think i've got it fixed now. Cleaned out the WD40 and found some dielectric grease. Everything back together and seems to be working fine now.
Thanks
