Got a 97 Tourer that won't start (See DOA post if interested).  Pulled the starter relay and  applied 12v from an external battery to the two terminals closest to the fuse. Got a loud click when I turned the power on and again when I turned the power off.  I left the 12v on for about 10 sec. and the relay got quite hot (but I guess that is to be expected).  Can I conclude that the relay is working and that my problem lies elsewhere?  Is this the best and only test of the relay?

when the coil is energized it pulls mechanically a bar over two contacts that should cause 12V on the input side to be sent to the output side.  In other words if it is hooked up as designed it puts 12V directly from the battery through the mechanical contact to the starter motor.  You could check this if you have an ohm meter across the two large contacts or bolts.  When the relay is energized you will have continuity across the two and when not energized you will not.  If it is burned inside, you may have continuity and it still not run the starter as it may not be mechanically a good enough connection.
